Hi anybody and everybody.

Not sure if this is the place for this.

Does anyone have knowledge of a test device that can connect inline or pass through to ( say ) a fibre ONT and Firewall/router WAN to see what data streams are being sent to the router, my main interest is in VoIP data streams.

I am not interested in the down side of the router, I have Wireshark for that .

A small ethernet switch with a monitoring port (ie any 'managed' layer-II switch) and a laptop running VoIPMonitor would be a good way to go for this application I reckon. As a bonus you can run Wireshark right alongside it :)

Personally I'd use a 11" MacBook Air because they're powerful and have a good screen & battery life, but are also very lightweight and easy to squeeze into the rats nest at the back of your average sever rack. But each to their own for the hardware; whatever spins your wheels.

Or just pick a SIP trunk wholesaler that runs that for you ;-)

For the OP though, and as speed, just mirroring the WAN link of the router is an option using a simple managed switch or old hub.

The other thing to think is if you're doing VoIP installs considering making sure the customer has a decent router terminating the connection that let's you do this sort of diagnostic. Mikrotik, for example, has a built in capture tool that you can running directly on any interface. So you dont even need a site visit to do a trace.

What sort of router do you have connected to the ONT? If it is a FritzBox, then that can capture traffic using its buitin hidden support web page. There is also a way to get it to pipe the traffic to a PC where you can get Wireshark to filter and capture it. EdgeRouters or other routers with accessible Linux can also directly capture packets from the WAN port.
