Have had some fun with a few alarm companies on behalf of a customer. Trying to explain they need an IP monitoring solution if it's to be monitored by an alarm company - and IP what? Says the alarm guy.
The alarm will need to be monitored via IP, not the phone line.
Huh? we just connect our dialer into the phone line.
Ah, it's naked.
Huh?

You get the idea. Seems alarm companies still need to do a lot of waking up, or many of them will be left behind in a year or two. It surprised me that each of the alarm techs I spoke to were completely mystified and had no concept of this scenario.

I saw a stand in a mall recently advertising a security system with a built in GSM gateway. This seems to make logical sense to me. If I was a smart crim I would cut the phone line before breaking into an alarmed house. I'm sorry I can't remember the name.

I've toyed with the idea of entering this market a few times - there are some great examples of IP based home monitoring/integration being done overseas now.

Anyone want to look after the hardware while I build the software back end and interfaces? ;)

Also, AlarmNZ have a solution for IP monitoring. Retro fitted one of these for another customer converting to N-DSL / VoIP.

My company supplies IP cellular routers to a few alarm companies and has done for number of years.

Is anyone actually allowing customers to login and access / remotely control their alarm over the web though? or is it all still a black box sending data back to the monitoring company via IP instead of over copper?

Alarms have been remotely controlled for years.
The alarm company can remotely dial into the alarm to reprogram it.
However alarms are not programed by customers for obvious reasons.

Alarm NZ can completly control their ip panels remotely.
They also let you veiw logs via their website.

As they can control the units they can set the alarm remotely if you forget to also.

There are going to be plenty of monitoring companies who are really going to come struggle if they haven't already realised that IP based monitoring is going to be virtually essential in the not too distant future. Whether it be an IP based GPRS/CDMA or internet it's the future and they should be supporting the service now. I bet some will be out of business pretty quickly..

Yeah I understand this - my question is whether there is anyone in NZ who is going beyond the basics you described above. Have a look at the kind of stuff that Alarm.com are doing (in particular the demo center links at the top right).

Remotely arming/disarming my IP connected home via a web portal etc. (not programming / provisioning but accessing its functions remotely)

Yes as home automation.
For example an ip alarm can connect to a local pc with the smarts to do what the alarm.com stuff does.
Without a local pc you can do all of those things with monitoring.
However remember that the more you want it to do the more expensive the systm will be.
