Hi everyone,

I have installed some SPA-942 phones running on a wireless broadband connection here in Hamilton.

Unfortunately I am having a lot of trouble with the voice dropping in and out (this is what people calling us tell us, and what I have experienced when I have been called from the VoIP system to my mobile).

I have fiddled with using different codecs and RTP packet size in the SPA config, but nothing seems to make a real difference.

The bandwidth is great - when I run a bandwidth test we get at least 2mbps each way.

Has anyone had any experience setting up VoIP phones over a wireless broadband, and got any ideas on what I can try to improve the calls?

Sounds your connection has a lot of latency on it (which is common with wireless) - who are you using as your SIP provider?

I have WIC wireless here in Dunedin..
Connection is 2mb Down - 512kb up
Our VOIP provider is Xnet with VFX - on a Linksys PAP2T

What i have found is...

If the wireless network is busy-- from a ISP point of view or localy in our flat, we will get alot of dropped packets and latency.
This makes call quality very bad and sometimes even drops calls..

I think this is mostly because of QOS..
Because our Wireless provider does not prioritize the VFX traffice..

I am thinking about switching backto DSL next year.. hope that fixes it..

But all in all.. the VFX quality is very most the time.. its only 20% of the time its really bad..
But its not Xnet fault..

What kind of router do you have hooked into your wireless connection? What voice codec is default on the SPA's?
- having a router that will do QoS at your end will help
- using G729 voice codec is also better for a variable connection (and as these are IP phones voice quality will still be very good).

You are ultimately at the mercy of your wireless provider though. Perhaps enquire if they have and QoS features they can apply between you and 2talk.




Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?

We run Araneo wireless over ICONZ in Auckland 2mbps up/down guaranteed but usually around 10mbps. We have a trixbox and pfsense router and can have 4 concurrent calls over vfx while saturating our internet with data transfers no issues in quality at all. We usually get a latency of around 10ms to ICONZ core. Sounds like a QOS issue for you?

Comes down to the quality of the wireless provider. For comparsion, I have tried VFX over a community based wireless network. This suffers alot of variation, thus call quality can be a problem. Same can of course be said for DSL, so you just need to give it ago an see.

Hi Thanks for your replies.

I have recently installed a Trixbox for them, and connect to the VoIP provider via the IAX2 protocol.

They are pretty sure they have noticed an improvement, but are giving it another week or so before having a definite conclusion.
