as far as i know there is no proper SIP client for the iphone still, really want to get some 2talk loving on my iphone,

Fring is pointless as it routes the SIP traffic via there overseas servers.

Hmmm, not the answer I was looking for, but I seem to be getting to the same point quickly...

You might find something in an un-official app if you're prepared to jail-break your iPhone. But IIRC Apple have made it part of the agreement that developers are not allowed to create applications which connect SIP by any means other than Wifi. Presumably to keep the mobile operators happy.

If you have a jailbroken phone you can find in cydia SIAX (http://siax.org/).I have a 2g phone and it works just great on wi-fi. I heard that over 3g it also works preety good. They say it works even over GPRS but the quality is pretty bad.
For now it's free (no license required) but they say you will have to get a license (5 or 10 usd) which is reasonable.

If you have a 1.1.4 iphone you can use sipgate.de 's application which is free.

I want it to work with an on-site Asterisk, via the WiFi...  Not an internet based SIP provider.

The catch with VoipBuster is that the list of 'free' contries changes randomly.  The services costs 10EU per 120 days, and when you sign up your local calls are free, but suddenly may not be one day when you don't expect it.  And you wind up eating through your credit with them.

per: http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+VoIPBuster

As with any termination service claiming to he 'free' you need to watch the fine print.  Free termination almost always has a hitch, or comes with a load of spam/advertising.

There are a number of reputable firms based in NZ providing good value termination plans with 'minute plan' options to suit most budgets...
