As the title says, I'm looking at doing this while on holiday and interested to know if anyone has done similar and is the call quality usable? I'm using Zoiper on my android phone.

2Degrees want $7/day to use their roaming service but I can get an Oz prepay for $10-$20 that will cover my data for the length of time I'm away.

Thanks,

I did that with a 2Talk VOIP number about three years ago with a Vodafone SIM in the UK and Europe. Worked okay for the twice I actually used it 😀

I use my 2degrees VOIP when I am away by connecting to my home OpenVPN server.  But this is not the best if you want to be receiving calls - you have to keep the connection up all the time.  Fortunately, OpenVPN uses very little traffic to maintain a connection if there is no traffic going over the connection.

Thanks for the replies. My plan is to connect my Zoiper phone direct to my "landline" 2Talk account and forward my NZ mobile number to a second 2Talk account which I'll also register on the Zoiper app. I was interested to know if mobile providers (in Oz) block sip traffic and also what the call quality is like. I did a lengthy chat session with one Oz pre pay provider before getting them to understand what I was talking about and it seems they (at least) don't appear to block internet calling.
