Goodbye faithful NEC test NEAX boxes (NEAX=Nippon Electronic Automatic Xchange) the analogue landlines days are finally numbered!
Silly Telecom facts!!!!
All NZ's Electronic Digital Xchanges were sold to Post office very cheaply as they were for testing phase. I believe the first NEAX 61K went into Lower hutt while later versions became 61M and finally 61S before they fixed them up and offered a 16 bit version, the NEAX 61E (or Sigma-E) which is the common one.
Most new "exchanges" are now Alcatel (or were they nokias) RemoteLineUnits now feeding off "host" exchanges By fibre.
The last electromechanical Crossbar exchanges were removed from Hedgehope, Waitakaruru, & Turua in mid 2001
These were also NEC units & also for "testing"
The last Mechanical UAX (which needed an operator for Tolls) was removed from some place up north in 1996.
