Hi there,

I currently have TCL Cable broadband with a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router and I would like to move to VOIP for my calls. I am looking at using a softphone like the Gigaset A580IP and will probably go with 2Talk.

What I need advice on is whether this router model will support VOIP or do I need to buy a new wireless router that does?

Apologies if this is a stupid question but I am a VOIP novice .

I would be extremely grateful for any advice

When people say a softphone they mean a PC based VoIP application and a headset - are you wanting to run one of these as well as an 580IP?

The IP phone just plugs into your routers ethernet ports so a WRT54GL will work fine. You will probably just want to set up some QoS rules to prioritise VoIP traffic.

Yeah, sorry when I said softphone I meant the A580IP.

How complex is it to set up Qos rules?

Easy, install Tomato - http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato - it's a really nice firmware distro and has a heap of nice features, from here there is a nice gui to change QOS rules based around your needs. You can also boost the Wifi Power a bit (I recommend running it at 120mW)

Give that a go anyway, there is a VoIP version of Tomato but you really don't need it, just set up QOS rules and your set.
