After waiting years for the Tier 1 Teleco's in NZ to start embracing SIP Technology finally we have some progress..

And yes we will take a lot of credit for this as well, as again we think it says something about our network, expertise and delivery of standards based SIP services in NZ, we were pretty pleased to see TelstraClear wanting to work with us first on this and represents a huge move forward in connecting up Next Gen VoIP networks.

Yes correct, instead of expensive legacy SS7 links between carriers it now runs via IP and does all Local and Toll bypass calling betweeen our 2 networks.

Will have a lot more advantages going forward as well as SIP will support a lot more services, like HD voice calling etc.... (when TCL can support it ..... nudge, nudge Drew if you read this)

TCL already have some VoIP customers I belive, mainly in the commercial area rememeber their NextIP TV ads, don't quote me though as I don't work for TCL.

What it means to TCL is that they will probably get a lot of interest from others now wanting to follow us, this has a huge significance for the industry as well as the TCF has a working party around IP Interconnect designed at looking at replacing PSTN services with IP, WxC is fully active in this and as you can imagine we have been pushing very hard to get this in place... very very slow progess,

We have pushed ahead with our friends at TCL outside of this to to show what can be done in a bilateral arangement, trust me this is pretty big for the Teco industry here and should hopefully starting pushing a few buttons with others that they need to move forward and stop being speed bumps..

Cool, so, do you guys now do peering at the exchange or do my phone calls from Paraparumu have to reach the shore of California before being routed back to Auckland?
That'd be a good advancement for a telco with a no-peer-no policy.

Well done Phil. I too hope that TCL (and subsequent peering partners) enable HD Voice (aka G.722 in the first instance).
That will be awesome.

Are you planning to peer with other local PSTNs, especially Vodafone, 2Degrees and the various VoIP providers? Hope your gateways support T.38 as well.

Time to find a new industry!

We have been peering with other tier II carriers for awhile, We have also approached Voda over the last several years but they do not have the capabilities at this stage and have been more focussed on other technical areas, same for 2d, T38 is a pretty basic requirement and has been supported across the WxC network for a number of years.

Our Voice switching Network has been a full SIP core for around 8 years now
