Hi

I am thinking of moving to a voip service, but can not find many cordless voip phones in NZ. I woild like not to have an ATA if possible.

The only option I have found so far is the Siemens Gigaset A580 IP Cordless IP Phone, are there other options out there??

any feedback on the a580 if people have used it before?

You could always go for sometime like a Linksys (Cisco) Spa2102 which will interface between the VOIP and a normal phone.

Gives you alot more options in phone's you could buy.

I currently have a standard coredless phone pluged into mine.

Regards

Dion

A580's have great voice quality but are a bit cheap looking. The higher end 680's are a far nicer phone and you can get them for under $200 with the $NZ at present.

I have a Siemens C470IP basestation with the C47H handset, according to Hads at Nicegear they're not being made anymore, but it's a very nice phone and you can still pick some up in Australia. I also have a handset from an A580 connected to it (an A58H), sbiddle is right in that they're a bit cheap looking (I don't like the orange screen), but the audio quality is great and they're pretty robust - I've dropped it a few times.

If I was buying a new cordless VOIP phone I'd go for the C68* series (the difference between a C680 and C685 is the C685 has an answering machine), they have great screens and excellent voice quality.

I just got a Siemens 685ip dual handsets from the UK. It was here 5 days after ordering and cost $314 all up. It is certainly a good system and very stable.

The ATA (WRP400) used to drop audio occasionally which drove the wife nuts. We have been running the 685 for two weeks with 100% uptime. Having said that the new firmware for the WRP400 seems very stable.

PM me (Steve I hope you don't mind me sharing your UK reseller!) if you need the details.

Cheers, Matt.

I've just double checked and there's no C680IP model (non-answering machine), for some reason I was under the impression there was. If you can still find a C470 or C475 the difference is the answering machine.

If you buy a more expensive mobile, it might have wifi/voip functions in addition to cellular. Trying to use them might be a different story, so maybe ask for a demonstration of the voip before you buy such a handset.

Also check out this previous thread, a few suggestions there.

VOIP hardware - Wifi

Time to find a new industry!

Not sure why you want to avoid using an ATA. Ive got my voip through Slingshot with their supplied unit. Got our cordless phone plugged in to the ATA, and runs sweet as. ATA plugged in to Dynalink RTA1025.
My wife likes to talk , 2.5hr conversation the other night and no complaints. (and Id be the first to hear if there were any!). From memory I paid $79 , 2 year contract, and just reuse existing cordless. Sure I cant fiddle with things, but the thing just works so better things to spend my time on .

Call quality on a dedicated VoIP phone is far superior to what you can ever get on an ATA. Most of the Gigaset handsets also support the G.722 codec which gives you audio quality that's vastly superior to a regular phoneline.

The main reason to stick with an ATA is one of price, but there is very little in it these days between an ATA and decent DECT handset and a true VoIP handset like an A580.
