Worldwide Outage.
It's epic, they DID tell you not to rely on Skype for Emercancy Calls right?

We just go new Samsung Galaxies here at work today and one of the first things I did was setup Skype only to be told that i had failed to register and to check my password. Then I discovered that my desktop would not log in. Time then to Google and found the above..

Wasn't there a bad outage a year or two ago??

Regards,

Old3eyes

This has also affected our internet at work with users complaining of slow unresponsive pages. I often find that Skype is the cause of network issues at work. Maybe it is something to do with this piece of info I just found out about yesterday:

"Skype works in peer to peer mode by default and carries other peoples traffic like a file sharing program."

Since day 1 it was said that Skype uses peer to peer. That's the main reason I never wanted Skype.

If you're encountering heavy traffic loads you've potentially become a Super Node. Google will help you if you don't want this, I certainly recommand anybody in a corporate environment who uses Skype should be aware of how to install Skype so this won't occur.

myopinion: "Skype works in peer to peer mode by default and carries other peoples traffic like a file sharing program."

Correct, but the traffic is only really a worry if you are a supernode really.

almaznz: But i would like to get my hands on a "Mega-Supernode"

No, you don't... Unless you have lots of bandwidth available. Because it will use a lot. Here is some interesting read about this.

myopinion: They dont run servers

Yes, they do. Only voice traffic is distributed between nodes. They still need account authentication and interconnection to POTS.

Can you please enlighten me on how to install Skype so it wont turn into a supernode?

First: use NAT and a Firewall. In other words, if your PC connects directly to the Internet, with no NAT and firewall then it may become a supernode.

People erroneously believe Skype uses P2P all the time. This is not the case. P2P is just a layer, mainly used by supernodes, to make it easier for users to find other users. If you are not a supernode you won't be carrying any communication for the other users.
