Hi -

First post - but already I feel at home in the Geek Zone!

As requested, I will try to give as much information as I can about this problem.  I live in Spain and, some time ago, bought a Linksys SPA-2102 ATA.  I also bought a UK DID from a company called Connexin and a Spanish DID from a Spanish company.

The Spanish server allowed me to 'map' that number onto my Connexin account, so that calls to either number rang my phone here.  All worked beautifully.  Then the Spanish provider went belly-up.

I have since been trying to get another Spanish DID in order to get back to where I was.  I tried a number of providers, most of whom didn't even bother to reply to my questions about what I wanted to do.  I had a couple of trial numbers from some providers, but we were unable to replicate the successful mapping of before.

So I decided I would buy both a Spanish and a UK DID from one provider - Localphone - and accept that I would have to tell all my contacts about the change my UK number.  However...

I have been totally unable to get the SPA-2102 to register with the Localphone server.  They have given me a second SIP ID and Password to try, but they both fail.  If I run X-lite softphone, I can connect to the server with both accounts/passwords, so presumably they are valid.

I have been working with the Localphone support guy who has had me send a copy of the settings page.  He assures me that these are all correct.  Throughout this time, the Connexinaccount has been working fine, so I am happy that there is nothing wrong with either the SPA-2102 or my router.  The softphone works ok, so it's not the router or internet connection.

But Localphone tech-guy has now said: "Unfortunately without being on your side of the network I think we have exhausted what can be accomplished via email support." - which leaves me with two purchased DIDs that I cannot use!

So that's the problem.  Before I start sending reams of settings etc, does anyone have any quick ideas as to what might be happening here?  If you want to see the settings page, I can send it as a .pdf.

Thanks

Phil

Without knowing your settings it's impossible to give any advice. Considering there are only ~5 settings required to get a succesful registration (SIP proxy, SIP username, SIP password and if the provider requires SIP AuthID setting AuthID=yes and SIP AuthID) the most likely cause is that you have simply entered these incorrectly.

I can understand why you would think that!  But believe me, I have been working on this problem for several days now.  I have re-entered the settings for each of the two accounts I have been allocated several times; I have sent copies of my settings to the support guy (who does not seem very highly motivated!); I have asked him to confirm on several occasions that the settings I have entered are correct.

The only one that is masked, of course, is the SIP Password, but if I've checked this once, I've checked it a couple of dozen times.

I was going to attach a couple of files showing the main settings pages, but it seems I'm not allowed to yet!  So I have had to paste the text.  Maybe someone who is truly familiar with these boxes (unlike me!) can spot something that looks wrong.

Is it likely to be anything to do with the fact that I have a separate connection on Line 2 (the one that is working), despite the fact that if I disable this, I still don't get Line 1 working?

Phil

Hard to tell anything from that but the most obvious issue is that you're trying to register both lines on port 5060 which will cause issues with inbound calls. Line1 should be 5060 and Line2 5061.

You don't say what error message is on the SPA, is it simply registration failed?

I did wonder about the ports, and asked the support guy about it - but he hasn't responded!  However, at one stage I did try changing the port number, and also disabled the second line altogether, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

The symptom is simply that the Line 1 light is not on, though Line 2 is.  When I go off hook on Line 1, the light comes on and I get dial tone, but on dialling, I immediately get a US-style busy tone, and that's it.

There seems to be a facility on one of the Voice tabs to monitor errors, but I don't know how this should be set up.  This definitely seems to be a registration problem, but I don't know why, as the same data works with the softphone.

Could well be that the standard Linksys USA dialplan doesn't support the numbers you are calling and therefore only passes through a partial number.

OK, but surely the SPA-2102 should at least register with the server?  The on-screen diagnostics suggest that it is not registered, and never has been.

I'm assuming that the dialling plan only comes into play once I actually dial?

Yip. Failed registration means that you're using incorrect registration settings.

Now, when you say "registration settings", what exactly do you mean?  Are we talking SIP ID, Password and Proxy Server, or is there something else?  Because this is what the support guy has sent to me:

I am quite sure the settings are correct on your SPA2102 as we use SPA941's in the office. The only other page you need to change would be the 'Phone' tab.

to which I replied:

Not sure what I might have to change there!

I have attached print-outs of the Info, SIP, Line1 and User1 pages from the SPA-2102.  Could you look over them, please, and make sure everything is as it should be?

In particular, can you please confirm:

  1. That the settings on the SIP page are correct.  I don't know what these mean.

  2. That on Line1, the Port is correct at 5060; Make Call Without Reg should be NO; Use Auth ID should be YES; Auth ID should be the same as User ID; all the supplementaries should be YES; that the Codec should be G711u (the other line uses G711a).

  3. That the settings on User1 are correct.

I simply cannot believe that there isn't something staring us in the face that is stopping this from working!

and he countered:

Again everything looks fine in the settings pages you have sent me .

Well, sorry, but I just don't know where to go from here!  The provider support people say everything is ok.  If I use the same settings in X-link I have no problems.  So what the hell's wrong??  Cry

Phil

It's a strange world.

Whilst awaiting a reply to my latest e-mail to the support guy, and about to set the Expire option on my account, I decided to try one last desperate move, and entered the User Factory Reset code (877778) into the SPA-2102.  According to the manual: "The Phone Adapter will reboot and all user-configurable settings will be reset to their factory default settings".

Except they weren't!  The equipment rebooted, and all four lights came on.  Mystified, I looked at the settings and found that they were all still there, including the Localphone ones.  So I tried dialling out - and everything worked fine!  I tried dialling in, and that worked fine too, with both the UK and Spanish numbers ringing my phone here.

So you might like to make a note of this in case anyone else gets a similar problem.  I have no idea why it fixed it - or what it actually did - but since everything now appears to be working, I'm just going to run with it.

Very odd.  Yell

Phil

The user factory reset code only deletes a small number of user configured settings, it doesn't delete the bulk of the configuration options. A factory reset does this (73738#).

I suspect that there was a setting that you did change that has now gone back to the factory default causing the adapter to work.

Consider NAT issue.
Make sure "NAT Interval" is set and turned on in your ATA.

If multiple trunks & DDI are used, maybe using an Asetrisk server (1.6 or above) and set "qualifyfreq=1" to your endpoint is easier to get the things done??
