Hi. Recently I have been using Skype on my IPhone and have noticed that my data charges have gone through the roof.

All of the calls have been made by someone else and I was only receiving them.

I understood that if I wasn't the one making the call and wasn't connected to a wireless connection, then i shouldn't be getting charged for data.

Is this not correct?

Data is transferred both ways. It doesn't matter who places the call, Skype requires access to a network in order for it to function so you will be transmitting data and using up your mobile broadband allowance (if you have one as part of your phone plan).

I think you are confusing Skype with Video Calling (service provided by Telecom).

Video calling is charged per minute for the person that initiates the call. Video calling uses data but are billed as a 'call' so are charged per minute.

Skype and other video chat applications which, when you are not connected via wifi, is charged per MB for both parties.

You're also confusing it with regular phones. From the point of view of whoever provides your bandwidth you're using data, it doesn't much care what that data is. You use data, you pay for it.

I recommend that seeing as you are with Telecom, purchase the 500meg add-on, you only pay 10c per meg or less and skype calling will cost you less than 5c a minute
