i am wanting to go down the VOIP at home path. I have an account with 2talk and it is working fine with mt CallPlus broadband connection on IPhones, Linksys SPA-2102 and a PC Softphone.

The next step is to port the home number through Telecom to 2talk. Of course if I do this, I will lose my Telecom AND Callplus connections.

So I go looking for a Naked Broadband solution and find that Vodafone's 30GB offering at $65 (with Vodafone account discount) would be ideal.

I called Vodafone to organise it and was just about to confirm the switch, when the customer service person told me that Vodafone does not allow VOIP over its Naked Broadband connections.

Obviously this is a desperate attempt to hold back a Tsunami of change, where the future is that the telecommunications companies will be data providers and not voice account providers (with the revenue ramifications that go with that).

Given that Vodafone is not a Naked Broadband option, has anyone got any suggestions as to who would be the best?

I've heard all the horror stories, but personally I've had no problems with Slingshot's nDSL plan.

$82 per month for 25GB, free internet use between 2AM and 8AM (usually get ~5GB per night, sometimes over 10), and a free italk line with 500 minutes calling to most of the world.

Also, even if vodafone don't "allow" VoIP on its naked broadband connections, I'm pretty sure it'll work anyway.

I use VOIP on my VF Naked broadband connection.

Urban. I user their italk service usually, in addition to sipgate.de for a German line and a free 028 2talk number for when the italk line's busy.

Vodafone naked works really well for me with 2Talk, and their broadband complete modem (Huawei Ecolife HG556a) is SIP compatible so you don't even need to purchase an ATA or other VOIP hardware. Brilliant little device.

Probably means they dont support it. Dosnt mean it dosnt work. I find 2 talk excellent over my vf 3G mobile broadband

I had the same thought when I couldn't get 2Talk to register properly on my Vodafone naked DSL. Turns out it was a setting was incorrect.

Another hint, if you have Sky, pair your Vodafone broadband with Sky to get a free MySky upgrade. Works like a treat.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like VF were spreading a bit of FUD. I'll give them another go.

I want to use 2talk, because they allow multiple device connections (up to 6) on the account, but I'm not married to the idea.

I'll do what's best.

I use 2talk over two lines on my Vodafone naked DSL, but I found that after setting up the Huawei modem to handle the two lines, while the calls and process worked well, I had terrible 50HZ like hum on both lines. I returned to my very old trusty Thompson unit and I was back to normal. Problem is the "Trusty" part is now history and I have had a couple of failures and would like to try the Huawei unit again. Any hints on the noise issue? Do you have a noise issue?

Personally I use a separate device as an ATA. I keep hearing bad things about all-in-one devices, and I also like having a DD-WRT router on my network.

My setup is ADSL modem (Dynalink RTA1320) to wireless router (Asus WL-520GC running DD-WRT) to VoIP ATA (German Fritz!Box Fon DSL, reflashed to English and running in ATA mode only).

It sounds like a mess, but it works flawlessly. We're able to use any two of our SIP phone lines at any one time over the two extensions on the Fritz!Box Fon, voice quality is good even on the lowest bitrate codecs (G.729a).

The only noise we hear is due to our cheap cordless phones, and for some reason even that's been getting better.

My friend is on Vodafone's Naked Broadband ($55, 30GB) and it works OK with 2talk.

You may also consider a VPN connection, if you really want to use VOIP on Vodafone "safely".

Finally got this all done.

Vodafone Naked Broadband 30GB, VOIP through 2talk. All working well. With the MySky discount I'm saving about $70 a month.

Its amazing the Broadband Speed difference from CallPlus to Vodafone. Download speeds went from around 5000 kbits to 12000 kbits using the same router. Then up to 13000 kbits when I plugged in the Vodafone Broadband Complete rotuer/modem.

Negotiating through the Vodafone Sales/Help desk quagmire was an interesting experience.

Your experience on speed changes between vodafone and callplus is not what TrueNet are seeing. The differences between these two nationally are not that big. Is it possible you are on Vodafone's LLU? ie their red-zone? That may mean you went from a Vodafone bitstream service provided to Callplus to a Vodafone own service. The "may" is because it depends on where you are in NZ, LLU now means you never quite know who's DSLAM you are connected to, my description above is for Auckland.
