I have been looking at giving skype a blast, however being budget conscious would rather hear from fellow geeksters as to whether it is really the time for looking at a landline replacement. For those of you that use skype or an alternative VOIP solution can you please advise, what you use it for, have you replaced your home phone, what is the quality like and what sort of ISP plan are you on to get this quality. Also I saw some budget internet phones at DSE http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/44e988d30c05dfb0273fc0a87f990744/Product/View/XH7170 for about 40 bucks. Does anyone have one of these and how does it compare?

I apologise for all the q's however I sense a "Change in the wind" when it comes to telephony in NZ afoot and are keen to hear of anyones experiences.

Until you can get a SkypeIn number in New Zealand you will still need your landline. I currently have a number in Melbourne and San Francisco.

I use Skype on my TCL connection, but hardly the standard in New Zealand these days: 10Mbps down/2 Mbps up. Very good quality.

If you want to ditch your landline completely your only options at present are Woosh and iTalk since both give you incoming numbers. Woosh's phone service seems to be as average as their internet and iTalk is great over a good internet connection such as TelstraClear cable but is unusable over some ADSL connections, primarily UBS based. If you have ADSL you also can't ditch your phoneline yet so you'll need to look at other options for internet access depending which all depends on where you live.
