If performance has been bad for months and communication has been non existant... why put up with it?

You're all starting to remind me of the people who stuck Xnet for ages despite the atrocious international performance.. they complained and complained everywhere instead of doing the most effective thing which is vote with your wallet and change provider.

You're all enabling this type of sterotypical kiwi style dark ages poor service by sticking with them.

I believe Maxnet have the highest ISP average for youtube performance that I've seen. They have multiple transit providers, they offer naked ADSL and peer with APE/WIX unlike Telecom/Telstra.

Currently they appear to be the "pay a bit more per GB and get a quality service" option for ADSL.

I used the hosts file entries tehyitz posted on GPForums last night, and performance was pretty good. I could stream 480p without any buffering (downloaded at about 120% speed). 720p was better than previously, but still buffered. Now it's back to constant buffering on 480p (about 90% speed), although it's still better than what it was without the hosts trick. The streaming speed is constantly jumping up and down between 3000kbps. Maybe there's a better server than the one tehyitz gave... Anyone know of any candidates?

A shame there's no other players out there who can deliver the same performance as TCL Cable.

(Were I a DSL customer i'd have already shot the gap on TCL.)

That's only true if you live > 2km from an exchange or cabinet, perhaps you're not looking at the right providers.

For example: Inspire, Actrix, Maxnet and Telecom (not Big Time) are all offering great performance in my experience and from what I've heard.

All those folks citing 'great performance and experience' from DSL providers, any of them provide symmetric performance? Oh that's right, it's _A_ DSL. :-)

Having been a DSL user for the best part of 10 years, I connected to TCL for the first time in October 2009. When it works, it works well. Sadly i've been let down a bit on one of the sites I enjoy using most (Youtube) but a lot of other stuff is often faster on Cable than I had it via DSL (via Xtra, or Xnet, which are the ISPs ive used in the last 5 years).

I like having a decent upload speed, and I like the reduced latency. That all said, at this point I have no loyalty to Cable and will probably go back to DSL should opportunity present.

TCL benefit from a 'captive audience' in that the folks that're plumbed for cable, will often as not make use of it. It's the easy choice, especially if you're 'already on it', the effort of changing is not yet at 'critical mass'. It wont take much more, though...

I just looked at Telecom's web site and apparently my address now has ADLS2+ available. But that isn't cabinetisation I am guessing - just upgraded DSLAM's in the Exchange.

Looking at Telecom's broadband plans the closest I can find to my 50G TCL plan is Pro which is 40G and $80. That really doesn't compare.

I supposed there is Big Time but I haven't heard complimentary things about that. And in all plans I my upload speed drops from 2Mbs to something much less which is a pain for things like VoIP, video conferencing and backing up stuff to the cloud.

I gave TCL a call and they actually logged a case for me.
The helpdesk rep said they are collecting examples of customers who have problems with youtube....

So, people, looks like you'll need to brave those queue's and your voice will be heard.
Just go easy on those helpdesk guys n gals, it's not their fault :)

5 months and and TCL are now logging faults!!!!! another awesome delaying technique....I am sure they know very well what the issues are.

Um, cable isn't symmetric either. It's closer, sure, but still nowhere near symmetric, so why you'd bring that up is a bit puzzling.

From what I've seen, ADSL with interleaving turned off is lower latency than cable. Cable wins when interleaving is on, but if you care about latency so much then you wouldn't have it on. Also don't forget about TCL's stupid routing and peering policies that mean a lot of NZ traffic (and some AU) is going to be way higher latency than most ADSL connections.

So everyone on TelstraClear then? Because that's the case according to YouTube's speed graphs. Do they seriously not realise this isn't an isolated thing affecting only a few people? The average speed for TCL is 2/3 of the Wellington speed, and about half the NZ speed (I'm guessing the discrepancy between Wellington and NZ is the fact that TCL makes up a large number of connections in Wellington).

Mauricio - this thread and your blog have had a staggering 30,000 views. Have you considered contacting TCL on our collective behalf and demanding a REAL update? With these sort of numbers on your side, you have earned the right to ask the questions on behalf of thousands of us. In fact, with so many concerned people, you should get a personal explanation from their CEO, Alan Freeth. Is this something you might be prepared to do?

It's true the max upload speed of ADSL2+ is 1Mbit (128 KB/s) where as the cable plans are 2Mbit (256 KB/s) upload. If you aren't close to an exchange or cabinet then you would probably notice the difference otherwise I don't think it's a significant since usually people aren't uploading much at all.

Latency with interleaving off, I get 13-16ms on Telstraclear's own Clearnet Deluxe Left 4 Dead 2 servers.

I think cable and ADSL2+ aren't to different in performance thesedays if you're within 1-2km of the exchange or cabinet and don't choose a crappy ISP.

Telstra's recent move to increase 10Mbit/2Mbit Lightspeed 40G to 50G for the same price is an indication of this. 50GB with cable or naked adsl are about the same price now it seems.
