Unless you measure it at your router/gateway you're not going to get near an accurate idea of how much data your household is using.

Belsamber: No offence, but do you really expect TCL to keep logs of every single thing you and every other of their customers download?

I know for a fact that they do.  I had words with them last year about the level of usage they portrayed in their usage meter, and the level i felt was being used by me.  They sent me records showing all the transfers coming from my wifi router mac address.

Hi,

This is the way that usage metering actually works for TelstraClear broadband:
  • TelstraClear uses Juniper E-series BRAS. In other words,  broadband sessions  terminate on these BRASes.
  • TelstraClear uses the Juniper SRC session controllers to manage all broadband sessions on the BRASes. (As someone pointed out.)
  • The SRCs generate RADIUS accounting records (start, stop, interim)
  • The RADIUS records contain in bytes and out bytes. Usage is calculated as in + out
The TelstraClear usage processing system is solid and accurate. Please note the following:
  • Usage is calculated as in + out. In other words, you cannot only measure your downloads, but you also need to take into account uploads. (Especially important if you use apps that use a lot of uploads, such as photo uploads and P2P etc.)
  • Usage is calculated at layer 3 (= IP). This is used as it is a layer 3 (internet) service that is sold to the customer. This means that layer-2 overheads (Ethernet/ATM et al) are not included. However, layer-3 overheads are.
  • The current "resolution" of usage measurements is hourly.
  • Usage data may be delayed for up to 6h. (But normally it comes through in semi real time.)
While we have had some use processing issues on the past, none of them have been related to the accuracy of the methodology that we use.

Also please note, we do not track detailed internet activity as discussed in this thread. We only track broadband session in and out bytes for billing purposes.

Hope this explains things. Happy to answer any questions.

hmmm.

Well that reassures me somewhat. Now its just a matter of nailing down whats using the data in our household.  I suppose the VOIP could be....we do regular calls overseas.

Im not griping with the TC service, far from it.

The force is strong with this one!

We apologize for this issue. It was caused by a hardware failure in one of our data centers preventing access to the usage meters. Fixed now.
