Hmmm. We know there's something wrong here when I can get to Geekzone faster through a VPN ending in Sydney than through my standard TelstraClear HFC 100 Mbps connections.

Actually I can get to Geekzone faster through a Telecom mobile connection than through my TelstraClear HFC connection.

What's going on TelstraClear?

Just tested something here...

Ping to www.geekzone.co.nz (which is behind a Cloudflare POP in Sydney) when on TelstraClear is around 150ms.

On the same TelstraClear connection but using a VPN with an endpoint in Sydney: 50ms.

There's something really bad cooking up on TelstraClear's routes.

Looks like Telstraglobal (formerly Reach) routing to Equinix data center via Hong Kong again... then it seems like it goes to Singapore rather than Sydney Cloudfare server.

Odd.

The gang of four peering arrangements in AU are just as bad as the Telecom/Telstraclear peering arrangements here.

Unfortunately you don't have another option on Cable, you have to stick with Telstraclear.

Matt it's a route change in Australia for some reason.

What you're suggesting is TCL should be monitoring every BGP change across the internet and reacting to it.

It's just silly to expect TCL would be doing this and understanding the impacts.

I've pinged someone in Telstra.au, so we'll see how quickly we find out what's up and if they can fix it.

That might explain why my new Cloudflare enabled website is no faster even being served from Australia rather than from the USA. Via a VPN to Australia isn't any faster for me, but it's no slower either. A VPN via the US is slower though. I'm using a website performance testing tool I have set up to help make changes to one of my websites.

Why are you on Telstra still? Sure the 100mbit plan is great and all but I see these threads pop up quite often on GZ ;)

On a /slightly/ related note, I have been seeing quite a few Cloudflare errors popping up whilst browsing Geekzone, sometimes I can not access it for at-least 10mins while I have the "This website is currently experiencing problems" error display.

These route/proxy problems don't happen ALL the time. When cable works, there's no DSL technology that can compare to it.

As for any errors, I haven't seen these for a while (I've been doing some changes in the background in the last week) so if you see anything from now on, take a note, then post here. Make sure to check with Geekzone Status Page to see if it wasn't an outage (we took some hits this month with updates and maintenance work).

So is the problem really that the CDN is announcing 108.162.202.66 to the wrong asianetcom.net interface for equinix.com which is where Telstraglobal.net is picking up traffic from?

It looks like it's changed though, so perhaps someone is currently pushing in changes to fix the problem.

telstraclear's always been pretty hit and miss for australia traffic. is your google going to to australia yet?

74.125.237.24, 8.8.8.8 should be ~25 msec higher than ping to auckland.

139.130.4.4 probably routes fine as it's on telstra australia (dns).
