I have some family members looking at computing options, what sort of apps are available for the RT? Being able to run office is perfect for their needs, but I'm concerned that the apps they use won't be availble when it's being used as a tablet. Mainly, NZ news, NZ stock prices, skype, internet banking. Is there an easy way to see what apps are availble for the RT? Are windows phone apps the same as RT apps?

Yeah ok Johnr. I have read through those. And yes, I had noticed that search bar, but thank you for so condescendingly pointing that out.
That particular post is over 3 months old, I thought there may be a bigger selection now.

I've had an explore around the Microsoft site and it's unclear to me if all Windows 8 apps work on RT. "Important Surface RT only runs built-in apps or apps that you download from the Windows Store. " But does all Windows 8 apps run on RT? I found a search area for apps can filter by "Windows 8/Windows RT" but I can't find where I can just browse apps available.
Any (friendly) suggestions or help would be appreciated.

All of the 'modern' or metro apps run on both Win 8 and Win RT.

However 32/64 bit desktop applications will not run on Win RT.

Anything from the built-in store will run unless it is one of a few links to the desktop applications.

Right ok, so it will run the modern metro apps, I knew it wouldn't run normal desktop applications but I was unclear as to what apps it actually would run.

Good to know, I thought perhaps it would be a bit like the android app ecosystem but clearly it's a bit different than that.

After getting a Surface RT for a friend and setting it up for them a couple of weeks ago, I have to say it is by far the best tablet I've used yet. The upcoming Windows 8.1 update makes some very nice improvements as well.

When it is time to update my Galaxy Tab, I'll be replacing it with a Win RT one.

That 8.1 update adding outlook makes it a really suitable device for the person I'm helping, I'm trying to figure out if it can be his tablet and partial laptop replacement for him. Ideally it would have a docking solution for monitor, keyboard, ethernet etc, I know there is some for the Pro, but not for the RT.

It has display out as well as BT support for wireless KB/mouse or USB. The wireless is dual MIMO and beats my HTC One for signal quality (that's saying something) so little need for ethernet port unless wireless isn't available.
