Hi

I am after some help, I have a friend that is with telecom and gets 40gb a month with their broadband. their wireless is password protected and only shows as having their computer and tablet connected to the modem.

Most months they will use a maximum of around 20gb. last month they exceeded the 40gb looking at their usage history it shows usually of using approx. 1gb upload usage and 20gb download usage. But last month they used 28gb upload and 13.6gb download. so last month they used a hell of a lot more upload that download for some reason.

I did a little bit of research into this and downloaded an application called Currports. it shows as having a lot of processes for google chrome for some reason.

Any help of where this upload usage is going would be much appreciated.

I have taken some screenshots and put them in a word document but can only upload images on here I think.

PLEASE HELP

Thanks,

Taylor

What version of Windows ?
Run a full virus scan as well as MalwareBytes Antimalware.
Install a network/bandwidth monitor to ensure it is that machine causing the data. (http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/)

Google Chrome does run multiple processes when its in use, thats normal.

anybody in the house use iTunes/iCloud.

another common culprit for 'unknown' large upload volumes is use of iCloud to sync photo libraries

Check for Dropbox on the tablet. Some come with them. Check for Dropbox on the PC. MS windows wouldn't have reason for P2P in vanilla form of course. Spotify uses nothing at all usually. I have never seen ANY P2P come from my client.

Spotify is P2P based, Watch the connections when streaming something popular, you will hit a bunch of clients.

I found in my experience it "seeds" next to nothing.. but there are plenty of cases out there where people were going through gigs a day in it seeding.

@OP, ild check theres not a large email trying to send which is timing out and trying again constantly.

As for google chrome, its designed to be very threaded. each tab, each addon, is often another thread, have a look at chrome://memory-redirect/ it should give you a good idea of what the browser is currently doing. Shift + Excape (or tools -> Task Manger) will show you which process is currently using the Network, and how heavy too.

Disable Dropbox anyway and see if the data use stops. If it does, then bingo, Dropbox has some issue - reinstall it.

Check the tablet's traffic monitor to see if it is the culprit, most recent tablets should at least be able to show their total data usage and which app(s) it was. But it sounds like someone is seeding torrents. Any games being played that use a torrent-based patcher?

+1 for hio77's suggestion. In my experience, the most common culprit for unexpected high upload is someone trying to send an email with a massive attachment, and said email getting stuck in the Outbox in a perpetual 'send' state. Boom, massive chunks of data gone. :(

Sounds like a stuck upload, either an email, a photo being synced, dropbox etc,

It is repeatidly failing and retrying,
