Twice within the past few days my laptop has rebooted. Afterwards there has been a message saying it had recovered from a serious error.

The Windows error reporting webpage tells me

Netgear Ethernet (fa312nd5.sys) has stopped working properly.

Click to go online to the Netgear website for more information and support options

Note
If you are unable to solve this problem and continue to receive errors, you can also uninstall Netgear Ethernet (fa312nd5.sys).

The trouble is so far as I can tell I don't have a Netgear ethernet adapter installed.  Looking in Device Manager it looks like I have National Semiconductor DP 83815 based PCI fast ethernet adpater.

I read somewhere that the problem could be with the video graphics driver.

Is there anything else I need to be looking at?

Thanks

what (a) is the exact model of your machine (b) OS and (c) the pci_id of your ethernet device from device manager?

[edit: short story windows may have automatically installed an incorrect driver update and you need to revert or find a better update. long story needs to be figured out with accurate information ;  )]

(a) HP Pavilion ze 5600

(b) XP Home Edition 2002 service pack 3

(c) I'm not exactly sure what you mean by pci id, I've copied the following info which is from the "Details" tab of Device Manager.

Hardware Ids
PCI\VEN_100B&DEV_0020&SUBSYS_0850103C&REV_00
PCI\VEN_100B&DEV_0020&SUBSYS_0850103C
PCI\VEN_100B&DEV_0020&CC_020000
PCI\VEN_100B&DEV_0020&CC_0200

Device Instance id
PCI\VEN_100B&DEV_0020&SUBSYS_0850103C&REV_00\3&61AAA01&0&90

Thanks for the help

No NETGEAR stuff.  Used to have a D-Link ADSL router many moons ago but the computer has had a complete re install since then, currently have a LinkSys ADSL WiFi router

I'm pretty sure windows update for xp did not install drivers automatically in any circumstance, so we could rule that out.

In any case, note the driver version and the version of that file, and then try downloading and applying the original HP driver:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=384678&swItem=ob-15627-1&prodNameId=385143&swEnvOID=1098&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=0

hp driver packs, you download and execute which extracts to a nominated directory...

then you have to run the setup.exe after that to actually install the driver..

[edit: pci id you provided is good, and confirms it is the correct hardware]

Thanks for the info.  I'm a bit confused as to why I would need to update the driver for the National semiconductor ethernet device when the error is for a netgear device.

Is the error being caused by something else, like the video driver as suggested on another forum? Via device manager I've done the driver update thing for both the ethernet device and the video driver and in both instances got the message that it wasn't possible to find a more up to date driver.

I did as you suggested, the original driver date was 1/07/2001 version 5.0.119.0  now the driver date is 25/07/2002 version 5.05135.2.  Time will tell how it all goes.  I might try the same with the video driver as well.

Thanks for the help and info

Technofreak: gzt Thanks for the info.  I'm a bit confused as to why I would need to update the driver for the National semiconductor ethernet device when the error is for a netgear device.

Windows error reporting thinks it is a netgear device, but it is not. In theory pci_id is supposed to uniquely identify hardware but in practice it does not (many significant variants use exactly the same id) and this is especially true for laptop hardware.

Hard to see how graphics drivers would be involved in a fault trigged in a networking module, but if you do update your graphics drivers, use the drivers on the hp site for your laptop model for reasons above.

In any case, if the problem continues return here and we will look a bit deeper.

Thanks for the explanation. I couldn't for the life of me see why a video driver would have any affect on this issue either.

I did have a quick look at the video driver and decided to leave that for the time being, there were 50 pages of drivers on the HP site when I did a search using the Radeon details that I have. All the ones I looked at were not for the card I have, though I didn't look through them all.

I'll give it a few days and report back how it's all going.

Thanks again for the help.

you would need to click through to your particular platform to find drivers for it:

Thanks again for the link.  That's a page i need to bookmark!!!!!

How exact does the match on the model number need to be? The sticker on my laptop has ze5626ap, I don't see that model listed.  There is the HP Pavilion ze5600 CTO Notebook PC and HP Pavilion ze5626EA Notebook PC listed but not the ze5626ap.
