So did Windows 8 actually sell out?

Kind of a 'serious' question as some people I know who are not keen on downloading due to data caps

Might happen, Lenovo don't seem to be interested in bringing anything apart from the Think brand kit into NZ/AU.

We tend to be left out of all the "cool" Lenovo products here

Did this work for anyone? I put in a request at about 11:00 and no email yet. Just me, or everyone?

Yip. Signed up for the free key just after midnight and received it at 3.30am.
It seems it might take a few hours to be sent to your email.

I would be surprised to learn that there is much overlap between the types of people who absolutely have to upgrade to win8 right now and people who have datacaps small enough to be worried about a measly 3GB download.

ETA: also, the download version is $40 cheaper than the CD version. I don;t think there are ANY ISPs left where the overage charge for a 3GB download is going to be anywhere near that price difference.

I've never upgraded my OS before, always just relying on device upgrade cycle to move to newer OS's so don't really know how it works

This is probably a dumb question but what does 'reinstall apps' mean for things like Steam.
I have dozens of GBs of steam games acquired over the years, with no CDs for most. Will I have to reinstall and redownload them all if I install windows 8?
What about things like Office 2007. I'm not even sure I have my CD for that anymore so will I lose it?
various other bits and pieces like VLC, iTunes etc etc. Will I need to make a giant list of every porgram I have and redonwload/reinstall them all?

I have just done the update via the download. It did a remarkable job of leaving all my progs and settings as they were.

The upgrade assistant analyses all your progs etc and gives you a list of possible problems so you will know what is likely to be problematic before you pay and start the download.

Wise to do a system image before then you have a fall back position. However, I was most impressed at how it all worked on my machine.

Can the download upgrade version be used to do a clean reinstall from scratch (without needing to find my windows 7 dvd which is who knows where!) at some point in the future if needed?

If not, could I find my win7 dvds, do a reinstall of that, then upgrade it to get a "clean" win8 install?

If the answers to both of these are no, can either be done with the store bought upgrade version?

I downloaded win 8 for $49-99 and wiped the drive and did clean install to try it. And no it wont activate. Message comes up "This key didn't work"
Havent tried installing on top of itself again to see if it works that way but at least now I know it wont work with a straight clean install

Excellent! wait... so a win 8 clean install won't activate but then a clean install over that will activate?

Really I would be happy if a win 8 install over a win 7 clean install works (for the future when I decide to blow everything away - I'm sure I can find my win 7 discs) But if the above works even better!
