kontonnz: the activation process seems overly?complicated why remove the UI ability to activate ; I can understand the power?with?he scripted ability especially for automated installs but for one off or out of band installs it just feels like jumping through?hoops?

Insufficient information for us to make that call :-) I installed it only because I have Lenovo X220 tablet PC (Core i5 4G) with both touch and pen and wanted to see how Metro worked with touch.

By the way I recently had a chance to play with Toshiba's and Lenovo's Windows 8 tablets running dual core Atom processor. Both don't have keyboards but have full touch and pen (could be Wacom technology) and weigh about 800gm. I could see using either one of them as a full time machine for me in the office and not having both a regular desktop and a non Windows tablet.

I see you still can't install it on older machines that took the original trial version fine.. Looks like we'll have to buy some new lab PCs if we want to test with this or just give it a miss and hope everyone else does..

Why not?

We've installed Win8 Pro on a couple of pretty old machines here, one being an compaq laptop with a celeron CPU and it runs fine. We did upgrade the RAM from 512MB to 1GB.

As Nathan said in an earlier post you need NX/DEP and SSE2. I tried looking for a bios update for this computer and couldnt find one so I have given up and have gone back to using Ubuntu. I don't have any issues with that operating system.

That's a bit harsh. Metro is something that just one needs to get used to. It's okay on a touch screen device but a bit less intuitive via keyboard and mouse. That's why I wonder why Microsoft decided to remove the Start button from the desktop since that's the way most people use Windows. So if you didn't have a touch screen device, you would still be in semi familiar territory.

As an aside when I spoke to a Microsoft guy about this, he showed me how you could just start typing from the Metro screen, even when there is no data entry box to type into, and it initiates Windows Search, not dissimilar to what happens when you click Start and then start typing into the data entry field in Win7. One could then argue that's one less click in Win 8 vs Win 7.

I don't mind the overall removal of the start button; they have simply replaced the "metro ui" as the start well thats the way i see it;

i have a huge prob tho with the separation between so called desktop applications and metro apps you can see this duality with internet explorer its annoying

for the most part win8 is not super bad; its just MS have missed the mark with a few things that can be very disappointing.

Not too keen on the lack of start button, but quite like the widget type design. It somehow feels to be more suited to a tablet computer or touch enabled screen.

But really, isn't there a pattern? (2000, xp, vista, 7, 8) ;)
