So if the RTM is released tomorrow (1st Aug) is it possible to get the $US39.99 upgrade now and install? or do we have to wait until the retail ver ships?

cheers

You will still have to wait for public release which is around the 26th Oct. I think their will be earlier releases but 2morrow is only RTM I think

billgates: Tomorrow is 31st July.

LOL. The original post was even made on the 30th.  Tomorrow, then, would still have been the 30th July in the US, so the 1st would still have been two days away. Now that its 'tomorrow', the RTM will be tomorrow....

Nathan are they going to fix the BIOS issue that a number of us with older computers that got the error code 000000x5d or something like that with the release preview in the final release or are we going to have to flag windows 8 completely. My computer doesnt have a security tab in the BIOS to enable NX or whatever to install the release preview.

No idea sorry but I can find out if you give me some more info

Personally I've not heard of any requirement for needing NX in the BIOS, unless you wanted to install the 64bit version and Client Hyper-V for virtualisation

Odds are that will not be changed. It is a security requirement included in platform certification. It has been available on processors for a really long time. It was available as far back as XP SP2 for instance. It would surprise me if a machine less than 5 years old did not support it, but life is full of surprises :  ). What is the exact make and model of your machine?

one big thing I am disappointed in about windows 8 is that windows2go is only in the enterprise version and not the pro; I've used it in in the consumer preview and release candidate and really liked it.

as to the error your getting from my understanding if you can't turn on the NX (no execute) or XD (execute disable) bit in your BIOS and you cant get a bios upgrade to support it then your cpu is more than liekly to old to support windows 8, time for an upgrade :)

Yes, you need NX/DEP and SSE2

What machine are you installing on specifically?

Check to make sure you are running the latest BIOS, and see if there is any option to turn on NX/DEP/No-Execute Enable.

I downloaded a copy through Volume Licensing the other day and installed it on my Lenovo Tablet which has both touch and pen.

That went fine but once I hit activation, I had major problems. The product would not activate through the Internet so I tried the phone system. But I was unable to select NZ and the only choice was Albania (I think!). So I found the NZ number and called and ended speaking to Microsoft in the Philippines.

I was asked to read out the digits that telephone activation displayed on the screen which were 6 blocks of 7 digits. But each time I read them out the CSR told me I was reading them out wrong!  And she said there should only be 6 digits in each block (there were definitely 7). After about 15 minutes I gave up and hung up and then Googled the issue.

Found I can do activation through slui and insert my volume key in the command line. Once the key was inserted automatic activation occurred okay.

I hope this is not going to be for all PC's since that's really going to cause people nightmares.

As an aside the OS works okay and it's much easier to use on a two monitor setup. So I have the desktop on my external monitor and Metro running on the tablet screen. Unfortunately there is a major issue with our EDRMS so I have had to boot back to Windows 7 to do any real work.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

the activation process seems overly complicated why remove the UI ability to activate ; I can understand the power with he scripted ability especially for automated installs but for one off or out of band installs it just feels like jumping through hoops

yes yes you can use slmgr –ipk <key>

I think Microsoft has really missed the mark this time; I like a lot of Windows 8 but some of it I just don't get it; I spent 20min just trying to work out how to power the thing off. that charm bar is seriously bad karma.  and even trying to add multiple accounts to the default email client argh it says change the accounts in the settings how do you get to the settings (finally found em, but not intuitive) and why not esp for some of us corporate types it would be great if you could have a tick box saying ignore security certificate not been signed  or self signed.

and two versions of internet explorer sigh i mean seriously, someone must have been smoking something when they came up with that;

at work we have a few thousands seats and I know one thing is that introducing something like windows 8 to the user base would be a disaster; all I can say is thank you for Windows 7 (an awesome OS)

at the end of the day windows 8 is nice on tablets it really is good in that space; but as a desktop seriously misses the mark
