KiwiTim: You could always try flashing the BIOS with the latest release for the motherboard.

I once had a motherboard which had the latest BIOS release installed, but this had been done several years back. I reflashed it with the same BIOS version and it performed much better. The BIOS must have become corrupted some how.

Of course, if you stuff up the BIOS flash your motherboard could be ruined, so there is some risk ... but its never happened to me.

This is kinda a long shot.....I didn't look to see if you have onboard sound.

If you are using the onboard sound ...perhaps try putting a sound card in and disabling the onboard sound. Or even just try running the games with the onboard sound disabled and see what happens.

Seems to me you are running out of options...and the only option left will be mb.

Have you tried stress testing CPU & GPU with a third party test tool. Perhaps consider a live-CD, to eliminate any Windows specific problems?
If it doesn't crash, then root cause would lean towards software.
Apart from CPU/GPU, only other candidate is the motherboard, assuming software is not the issue.

That is one area that I didn't try. Will have a go and see what does. Will have to disable the sound and see what happens as I don't have a spare sound card.

I have pretty much decided to upgrade anyway, new motherboard, ram and cpu, but now have to decide whether I go Intel or AMD

Stress tested with OCCT. No crashes while using it

Disabling onboard sound made no difference. Anyway, will just put it in the too hard basket.
