Windows 8.1 is an “update” to Windows 8, free to everyone licensed for Windows 8.  Because it’s an update, it adopts the lifecycle of Windows 8, and like a service pack, you have two years to move to it.  You could think of this as a “release.”

The Windows 8.1 Update is just a simple update on top of Windows 8.1.  It doesn’t affect the lifecycle of Windows 8.1 at all.  It’s not a new release; everyone running Windows 8.1 should install it.

Have Microsoft changed the designations in the current OS? The recent "update" (KB2919355 800MB) has introduced new functionality and previously, that would have been released as a service pack and not an update. Although this seems a trivial demarcation, when configuring a WSUS server it's very important, i.e. business asks, "what's in this weeks release", windows operations manager says, "it's just updates", next day business says "what the hell operations, you said it was just updates but there is new functionality that we didn't plan for?!?".

the last Windows client service pack was released in 2011

The Windows 8.1 Update really just provides a more familiar mouse and keyboard options, plus easier access to your apps and controls.

Ah, if I had a dollar for every time a Developer uses the word "just" when describing a planned deployment wink

let us know if you see any problems.  I've worked with a lot of customers deploying 8, 8.1 and 8.1 Update and we haven't found deployment blockers around hardware/software compatibility with the updates

You can think of this as the new normal

Servers are my primary concern, but workstations can cause productivity dramas.

As a "new normal", this is far from ideal, unless they introduce an attribute, identifiable in WSUS, to help us identify updates (bug fixes, etc) verses new features / enhancements. We got caught out with IE "updates" so we are now much more aware of this attribute, but it's far from ideal.

In other blogs it is indicated that with 8.1 KB2919355 the Task Bar can be retained in the interface formerly known as Metro, however, this appears to not work if you have a touch screen, it there a way to make it work on touch screen displays?

hamish225: can i get a version delivered through my WSUS server or do i have to download the 3.4GB file on every single computer through Microsoft's awful windows store thing and waste my bandwidth?

i just did a search of the updates i have and checked for unapproved updates, its not in there now.

edit: file size.

I use wsus offline, ( http://download.wsusoffline.net/
It downloads al the updates etc for all microsoft operating systems from WinXp to Win8.1

I then let it loose and it does all the updates on my pcs in one hit - one download, one update.

I have to update several pcs a day (work as a tech) so saves me gigs of internet downloads.

Unfortunaly wsus doesn't update win8 to win8.1 because it is not an update, it is an UPGRADe - a new operating system according to MS.

I am in the process of downloading the ISO file (ready for USB or DVD, and if required would be happy to make it available ( as long as it doesn't contravene some sort of licence).

Shane

as a side note, this offering appears to duplicate what Microsofts WSUS provides, can you advise the advantages of this over WSUS itself?

having a quick look at it, seems like its more designed for offline/standalone, means you don't need to setup GPO, point your WU client at WSUS etc by the looks
