can i get a version delivered through my WSUS server or do i have to download the 3.4GB file on every single computer through Microsoft's awful windows store thing and waste my bandwidth?

i just did a search of the updates i have and checked for unapproved updates, its not in there now.

Why wouldn't you download the iso once and deploy it multiple times.

Were you able to obtain the ISO or did you roll 8.1 out via WSUS. I don't see and 8.0 to 8.1 service pack, but maybe it is listed under a different category?

For customers presently using Windows 8 volume license versions of Windows 8.1 (Pro and Enterprise), the path to Windows 8.1 is simple. You can leverage a fully-automated process to update existing Windows 8 Pro & Enterprise systems.

This process can be initiated using any software distribution or management tool, just by running “setup.exe /auto:upgrade” from the Windows 8.1 installation files.

All other Windows 8.1 versions upgrade through the Windows Store.

I think 8-8.1 is only through the store for all versions.
You can try this link here though, but it might get painful depending on how many PC's you need to update:

Also, be aware that if you are on an Enterprise volume license, then there is no upgrade path from Windows 8 to 8.1. You need to create new images and reimage each PC. Something like an MDT image that is set to preserve data might be the best way to go, otherwise you need to backup, upgrade then restore. We have been going through a hardware upgrade at the moment so we could just wait until users were issued with a new PC and put the latest Windows 8.1 update on them.

Luckily windows 8.1 update (the latest "service pack") has gone back to being delivered through windows update. It had a short period where it broke client connection with some older WSUS servers, but that is fixed now and the update has been reissued.

Thanks for the input, I currently have a single Win8 instance, and I think I'll leave it where it is. I have "upgraded" my laptop from 8 (which is what it was shipped with) to 8.1 and considering a rollback to factory to remove it. I'll wait until this trough cycle is finished and then look again at migrating more machines to "Win Everest" (assuming the peak/trough naming convention holds, Win 98/ME, Win XP/Vista, Win 7/8)

not sure why you had that problem with upgrading 8.0 Enterprise to 8.1 Enterprise

It definitely works and is supported as I have done this on thousands of machines

just setup.exe /auto:upgrade

Have also worked with customers who upgrade from 8 Pro OEM to 8.1 Pro VL, using their reimaging rights granted to all Microsoft VL customers.

Even that is supported

• The customer needs to have an active VL agreement (obviously).
• The only SKUs available via VL are Pro and Enterprise (with SA), so they would need to be licensed for Windows 8 Pro via OEM/retail in order to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro VL.
• They would need to reactivate the machines after the upgrade, using either KMS or MAK keys.

I'm just MSDN, so having this weird separation is perplexing but not particularly important as stated above, I'm sure it will standardise over time.

Must have been reading the wrong sites regarding updating from 8-8.1. Everything I could find at the time said Enterprise had no update path. It coincided with a company wide hardware upgrade anyway, so reimaging was not too painful and I got to clean up the WDS images a lot after learning things from making the original windows 8 images.

I think I could perform an upgrade using the disk, but it did not retain installed programs and data. Probably I was missing installing it with the command line switch you mentioned so it just did a clean install.

Are you running the MSDN Windows 8/Windows 8.1 licence on the laptop? If you're using it for day to day use, then you're not actually allowed to do that with an MSDN licence...

Nope, laptop is preload from Sony.

I've got win 8 and win 8.1 test VMs so not a large enough footprint to be concerned too much about updates (it's likely the Win8 will never be updated anyway).

My expectation around the current edition was "incremental", so was anticipating Service Pack style upgrades, but 8.1 is much more like a release, i.e. as per it's R2 server counterpart.

I'm not sure it's so much a jump and a new release. Previously "R2" Releases were limited to Servers, but this time it also applied to the workstation, I guess its a watch this space situation to see how this plays out.
