<<As an ex-tech support guy, I can tell you Richard's really going to appreciate that everyone's now asking for him while his colleagues twiddle their thumbs.

If you think he did good, drop some positive feedback to the company.>>

I did think about putting the phone number there, but it's not exactly a secret - it's the standard HP phone number published.  It's not like a home phone number or something.   With the queue, which wasn't all that short, I don't think anyone's sitting around twiddling their thumbs and if somebody is popular because of good reputation, that's good for them.   They can only handle one call at a time.  And people are at work to work.   I'm sure HP has managers.   Pretty good ones judging by his ability to handle my problem, his access to information about my computer and the rest.

If HP sees it, they can know who is doing a good job for them.   Fear of publicity is absurdly rife these days with people hiding behind avatars, first [fake] names, pseudonyms and the like.  I think people should use their first and last names and not be hiding from their responsibilities.   It's not as though the world is full of crazy people wanting to find somebody to attack.   [Computer viruses notwithstanding and the occasional nastiness]

I get the impression that Geekzone is sensitive to even slightly
off-topic commentary like this so I had better stop now that the
technical problem is resolved.   I'm sure Vista salespeople are happier
to see a customer back on track, problem resolved, than trying to
return the computer and operating system.   Credit where it's due.

Ah, that's cool. We had extension numbers that invariably got leaked by consultants "Talk to Bob on ext. 232, he's really good"...etc.

With the queue, which wasn't all that short, I don't think anyone's
sitting around twiddling their thumbs and if somebody is popular
because of good reputation, that's good for them.

Not really. They don't get commission, or a popularity bonus (at least I didn't). They just get more work. Period.

They can only handle one call at a time.

Certainly not the case where I worked. We had allocation lists. Of course, the 'good' guys (like Richard) had more calls allocated than the slower or less effective guys, especially when internal issues arose. Managers/Consultants/Sales often call with "Hey, I know you're busy, but can you fix xyz for abc *now*". I swear the technically strong guys on our team did at least 50% more work than the weaker guys for the same pay. Unless there's a shot at promotion it really doesn't pay to be good in that game (one of the main reasons I moved into development).

I'm sure HP has managers.

So does Dilbert. I've never worked for HP so I can't comment on the quality of their management, but Richards ability to handle your problem & the knowledge-base he works with will in large part be down to him and his peers, not management. They're the ones figuring out the solutions, documenting the solutions and accessing the solutions.

Credit where it's due.

Drop an e-mail letting him know just how great he was. It will make his day and give him something tangible for his next performance review. Boosting traffic to him will just give him more work and might actually harm his stats.

I think people should use their first and last names and not be hiding from their responsibilities.

This is a nice idea but totally impractical on todays internet. GeekZone is quite civilized, but have you ever read the comments on YouTube?

It's not as though the world is full of crazy people wanting to find somebody to attack.

I only wish this were true. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griefer & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_troll for more info.

Skype 3.5 [newly released a day or two ago] now installed and all is working fine.  Vista is good.
freitasm:  are you installing the latest Skype, not an old download? Skype works fine on Windows Vista - I have it running on my Windows Vista 64 bit with no problems.

I had a similar problem last night when I got home.
Computer shut down fine yesturday morning before heading to work. Would have been off all day.  I had just got myself a new SATA DVD drive, so installed it as soon as I got home.
Note: Computer had not been turned on since shutting down perfectly.

Computer started to boot screen, Chose Vista.  Sat on the loading screen with the green bar flying accross the screen.  This continued for around 15 mins.  Decided that it wasn't going to load. Powered off the PC and tried again several more times, with the known last good, & safe modes.  Safe mode got stuck on CHCDISK.*.  Decided that the boot record somehow got corrupted when shutting down.

Used my Vista install disk, and chose the Repair Windows Install  (almost miniscule link at the bottom of the install page)
It discovered and fixed errors on the drive!

Next boot worked perfectly!

Now I am purchasing a 500GB External HDD to back all my info onto.

System Config Note:  Running 2 x 180GB WD 7200 Sata2, Raid 0.
Windows Vista & XP dual boot OS

Hope this little speal helps others repair their own system drives.  This also happened the next day to my work mate. Random.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 4x 2GB Adata 1066+ DDR2, Sapphire HD4850 X2 2GB GDDR3 PCI-E Quad DVI, 1000w PSU & over 4TB HDD space, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
