KiwiNZ: I ran Windows update yesterday and this has been happening to my Toshiba Laptop since.

Oh and I asked my friend about if they had Windows Update on when I was helping them troubleshoot the problem previously, and apparently they turned off Windows Updates within the first month they got their PC which was around a year ago..

I finally managed to get it into the advanced repair settings and did a restore back two weeks. Fingers crossed it is now OK. There was an ATi driver update this week, I have my suspicions about that update

I've had a customer with a month old PC running Windows 8.1 do this today too.
I am waiting for them to drop it off to take a look so will be interesting to see what is causing it.
Their PC is using onboard Intel card so no ATI drivers involved.

Well I couldn't get Windows going again so had to do a refresh of 8.1 on it.
That doesn't lose any of your files but you do need to re-install any software like Office & antivirus.
