CYaBro: Just antivirus by itself isn't really good enough these days.
We recommend Eset NOD32 plus something like Malwarebytes Premium.

I had malwarebytes but trying to get him to actually run it is going against brick wall. He does his sermons and email etc. Once he went to internet he now also learned how to google and that is his downfall. Doing sermon on mature man, google that and all inappropriate answers come up.
He had to download adobe acrobat or reader for his USA taxes as other pdf readers were not compatible and he never unticked all the addons and same with other programs

There is a free version of Malwarebytes, which can only do manual scans when the user does one, the Premium version runs in the background all time time, like the AV software, and blocks things before they can get into Windows.

It won't solve the problem. They would probably have trojans installed in no time.

yeah i did suggest it but they want to stay with Windows. But honestly something like Linux Mint would be ideal for them.

Neither of which are immune and the learning curve will just complicate life needlessly for them

No, you are right in a way, but it comes down to education with users being aware of whats dodgy and whats not etc. Didnt help my last boss though.... he fell for oldest trick in the book - "insert CC number here and we'll give you anything you want". Thankfully he managed to cancel his card the next day, but still left me in disbelief that he fell for it, a "veteran" of the internet.

I never bothered with AV etc for a few years until a friend backed up her PC to mine and I was wondering why my system was running like crap... all her files were infected - she was running Symantec AV which didnt pick up a thing. I installed AVG and thankfully stopped the virus getting too far. (and pulled the plug on her backing up)

I'd not use MSE there are much better options available for free MSE doesn't even gain a score for protection from well known AVtest.org it gets a big 0/6

Avast! rates best amongst the free options, according to my research a few months back. It updates automagically.

Free: Avast Free
Paid: ESET Anti-Virus / ESET Smart Security, in his case he would need to get the Smart Security Edition as it comes with Anti-Spam.

I used to recommend MSE about a year ago but it just misses so many viruses these days and gets disabled by them too that it isn't really worth mentioning anymore.

Also have Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware installed, also SpywareBlaster for good measure.

Then make sure you install Google Chrome or Firefox and install Adblock Plus, then for even more protection you can install Mcafee Siteadvisor, though it will slow down his browsing a tad.

Even though it's irritating keep UAC (User account control) enabled, helps in some cases.

Once you have done all of this you can make a new standard user account and have him use that instead of the administrator account, should help slow down those pesky viruses.

Run quick scans with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware at least once every 2 weeks and full scans once a month.

yeah i had never heard of it until freitasm mentioned it. Am going with MSE and setting it to scan 9am Fridady mornings as the computer will definitely be on then for couple of hours. also EMET 4.1

Yeah I put WOT on noobs computers, helps prevent people going to dodgy sites

just curious...

lots of legit sites are getting infected. I've seen a virus come in from a google image search for chocolate. Didn't even visit the site, the browser seemed to download part of the infected site with the image from the google site (renders the page in a frame to ensure the image loads, or some such)
