personally i rather pay $30 or so a year for updates than forking out a couple hundred every 5 years or so for a new OS. so i welcome the change.

but please no silly code names... i can never remember which version is which for OSX or android, just 10.1, 10.2 etc so much easier.

timmmay: Can anyone run the developer preview? Do you need an MSDN subscription or similar? A friend of mine has a failing XP machine which is fast enough (Q6600 4GB RAM), I might throw this on a spare disk I have for him if it's allowed.

its not a developer preview, but it is for technical people

Disrespective: Yeah, i'm really pleased that they are using an open development preview. It should hopefully give the users an OS which they actually want rather than something someone else thinks they want. We will see, of course.

Interesting that they chose to jump to v10. 9 is considered unlucky in Japan so perhaps that has something to do with it... or maybe it just got eaten...

I'm tempted to throw this on a machine and see what's what but might hold off to see how stable it is first as it would still need to be somewhat usable for me. I wonder if the preview will have media center capabilities out of the box?

Its already stable enough to be my main machine

macuser: I think Windows 9 will actually be a service pack for Windows 8, like 8.1

its not a service pack, we don't do service packs any more

Android releases are in alphabetical order. Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jellybean, Kitkat... you get the picture :)

sure, but when they release 4.3, 4.4, 4.41, 4.42, those names start getting confusing, and you think what version number was ICS?????

sure, but when they release 4.3, 4.4, 4.41, 4.42, those names start getting confusing, and you think what version number was ICS?????

And they used the name Jellybean for 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3..

I do understand why people get so hung up on the names of releases etc, the most most important is what it is and does it work, the name is meaningless. The version release number has some importance in version control and release management.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
