I think I should work in the Product Development team at MS, 9 is pretty much exactly what I (and so many others) tried to tell MS that 8 should have been at it's release :)

I guess better late than never! I'll be all over the preview.

Yeah, i'm really pleased that they are using an open development preview. It should hopefully give the users an OS which they actually want rather than something someone else thinks they want. We will see, of course.

Interesting that they chose to jump to v10. 9 is considered unlucky in Japan so perhaps that has something to do with it... or maybe it just got eaten...

I'm tempted to throw this on a machine and see what's what but might hold off to see how stable it is first as it would still need to be somewhat usable for me. I wonder if the preview will have media center capabilities out of the box?

8 was very widely available, and PLENTY of feedback was provided which was summarily ignored in favour of MS's vision. 9 Will only be a run away success if MS gives the users what they want. MS needs to put their "experimental" features in as optional in my opinion to stop
the whole 1 fantastic release, 1 PITA release habit which dates back to the companies first releases of Windows.

It may sound like I am giving MS a lot of stick, it's not intended that way, we as Resellers want to see more good releases.

There's no "Nine" because they want to move away from "Eight" as quickly as possible. Also Windows X sounds like... you know what.

I have to say from a google search perspective, vista gave the most accurate results. Numbers are ambiguous. Of course it's not a case of not getting results, but just from a direct results relevance perspective..

Can anyone run the developer preview? Do you need an MSDN subscription or similar? A friend of mine has a failing XP machine which is fast enough (Q6600 4GB RAM), I might throw this on a spare disk I have for him if it's allowed.

Interesting...  according to zdnet\Mary Jo, 10 will be the last major windows versions, after that they are aiming for smaller more frequent updates\enhancements. I wonder if they will name these updates after big cats?

That was asked at the Q&A :)

The answer, as you can probably guess, was "no"!

I think Windows 9 will actually be a service pack for Windows 8, like 8.1

As far as I can tell, Microsoft is skipping 9 completely. It wouldn't be the first time (there was no Office 13, and that was only an internal number and not even a marketing name!).

I heard somewhere that W8 users would get W9 free. That would be some kind of awesome for MS to do!

It would be one way for MS to acknowledge they didn't get Windows 8 "quite right" and help people "forget".
