I downloaded the update, but when I try to open it nothing happens.

Right, that looks somewhat legit.

However with the above You mis-understood.

The idea is to NOT install this patch, as it causes the problem. If it does nothing its probably already there.

Look in add/remove programs. Check the show updates and remove that one from the list

Other things that cause it is change of HW on OEM copies. Not made any changes?

You can run the diagtool and see if it reports why after removing the above patch if it exists.

I can find 3004394 in the update history, but can't find it on the "installed updates" list. Unfortunately you uninstall from the installed updates, not update history.

Yep we have a few machines showing up across our client base with this issue, machines show as activated. Will test for the presence of that patch.

Run cmd as administrator - wusa /uninstall /kb:3004394

Or search for it under windows folder and you will find the uninstall location

Yeap, when you search for the error in question it appears to be another patch tuesday fail.
