reven: What if I format my computer after the 12 months is up, do I still have the free upgrade? i.e. can I reinstall windows 10 then?

It sounds like how windows 8 worked if you had a new PC that had windows 7 (with free upgrade to 8)

So once it goes live you will get a reg code tied to the machine you are upgrading and you save the code somewhere in case you have to reload windows.

One day I hope it's just tied to the MS account so as soon as you login with the MS account it knows that you have a code to use windows.

Do they have text of new features? Video is an incredibly slow way to get information and for many can't be done at work.

Wonder if this will end up like the Office 365 model. Pay for the OS year by year after the 1st 12 months??

I think its the fact you have to sit through all the hype and crap etc, just to find out a couple of features. I too prefer just a simple list of features coming.

I see on another website talking about the free upgrade "Namely, the software giant has revealed that for one year after the official launch of Windows 10, you’ll be able to upgrade to the new version for free."

I guess you will have to pay for the upgrade after 12 months. Free within the 12 months from Win 10 release date..

That would be a great way to kill windows. I don't like those models, I'd consider going to to a hackintosh or (gasp) linux. If an OS license costs me $150 (like W7 did) and lasts me 5 years and they come out with a model where it's say $50 per year my costs go up for no gain.

I stopped upgrading Photoshop at CS6 when Adobe went to this model. The new versions have marginal new features that I don't need.

I watched it, this is what I can remember:
* Free upgrade
* Talk to Ford Cortina on PC as well as phone
* Smutty pictures taken on phone automatically uploaded to the cloud with automagic red eye removal
* Play your xbox one remotely from dads PC when the folks are watching TV.
* Universal apps which run on phone, tablet and PC
* New web browser where you can annotate moustaches and text etc onto web pages and it will be on all your devices
* More touchy office
* DirectX 10.

Nathan, so are you confirming there are no second and onward year subscription type charges? The deal is, you get it free if you do the actual upgrade within 12 months and that is the end of it? Nothing further to pay? If this is the case, I will be very impressed by MS taking this approach.

I have been pretty impressed with W10, whilst it's not perfect, it's pretty much what we wanted W8 to be and is for us as a reseller and support partner, the Next W7 (Stable, usable, accessible to entrenched customers.).

I can't wait for the next build, I am hoping it's close to production usable, so I can spend more time with it.

I doubt there will be a subscription cost to their os. Likely will be based simlar to OSX os upgrades.
They aren't dumb enough to alienate their customers. No basic pc user will want to buy a new pc with Windows 10 on it and then have to pay yearly just to keep Windows on it. That's just asking for people to buy macs then.

I'd be inclined to agree, but I don't make assumptions like this because unfortunately I've been proven wrong in the past :)

Better to get that clarification up front so we can accurately inform customers and they can plan accordingly.

I'm also interested to know what happens if you reinstall your OS after the first 12 months? Will a product key be generated as part of accepting this offer?
