nathan: you can upgrade from Windows 10 Insider Previews to the July 29 release, but yes its only free for Windows 7SP1 and Windows 8.1 licensed machines

just to clarify, you can upgrade from the insider preview, but you dont get a free license.
Even if you install the preveiw , You will still need to buy it if you dont have 7,8 (Which is what youre saying)

Theres so much FUD about regarding Win10 free upgrades, with tweets by MS staffers being misconstrued or taken out of context

So you have two options:

1. Upgrade to Win 7 Home ($150) with the option of a free upgrade to Windows 10 (or just stay with Win 7 if you prefer)
2. Wait for Windows 10 and pay roughly the same amount for Win 10 Home

The first option has the advantage of a fall-back capability - if your old PC won't run on Win 10, you can go back to Win 7.

Have Microsoft given any pricing hints?

I was kind of hoping that W10 would be a lot cheaper (like OSX is) given that they are doing free upgrades for a massive chunk of the PC market anyway.

OSX isn't free, its hidden into the price of the Apple hardware

the US pricing that has been announced is

Windows 10 US$119
Windows 10 Pro US$199
Windows 10 Pro Pack US$99

If its a Vista PC/lappy, its quite old.
Just put SP1 & SP2 on it, then Vista isnt that bad, if you have enough RAM.

I still use XP on my Media Centre PC & wont be upgrading the OS.

Windows 10 is free to install, upgrade your existing (legally licensed) Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1 machine. Its available for a free download from July 29 2015 until July 29 2016

If you fail to take advantage of the free upgrade in that 1 year window, you will need to buy it

Once you have upgraded to Windows 10, we will keep that version of Windows always up to date for the lifetime of the hardware you are running it on.

For the first time ever in the history of Windows, Microsoft is also supporting customers who choose to upgrade from the Technical Previews to the July 29 release
