Exactly what I've been wondering. But now I need to figure out my hardware setup to see if it would work :(

If really you want Windows 7, yes, it is a much better OS than Vista.

Win 7 Home Premium NZD $150
Win 7 pro NZD $220

If you only want a step up to a free upgrade to Windows 10, then it's probably cheaper just to buy Win 10 outright.
(Assuming that your hardware will run Win 10)

This for our old pc,that Im using solely for internet tv.Just had a solid state hdd fitted.Have checked and pc can accept win 7 ultimate,or home edition.but wondering if its a step up

Win 7 Home would be an improvement. NZD $150.
Ultimate would be overkill (if you could get it)

Surely at this point though, it is better to just sign up for the windows insider program, download a copy of Windows 10 beta and put it on, then get the free upgrade to final. Windows 7 is just going to nag you to upgrade it anyway. If it is just an old PC, why spend the money on 7 only to upgrade it to 10 in a couple of months anyway.

you can upgrade from Windows 10 Insider Previews to the July 29 release, but yes its only free for Windows 7SP1 and Windows 8.1 licensed machines

Will there be a mechanism that allows me to enter my W7 key into my existing W10 preview install or will i need to reinstall W7 to then install a licensed copy of W10?

And back to OP...

I had an old as in 6~7yo laptop running vista (single core, 2gb ram etc) upgraded to W7, huge improvement, I tried the W10 preview and it seemed smoother/better than W7, either way you can't really go wrong!

You are correct, you will need a valid windows 7 or 8.x key. It seems some reporters got a bit carried away with a single tweet Gabe Aul made and didn't read his other tweet saying that you still need a valid license.

No, was a fresh install so I think I may have just answered my own question :P

Have Microsoft given any pricing hints?

I was kind of hoping that W10 would be a lot cheaper (like OSX is) given that they are doing free upgrades for a massive chunk of the PC market anyway.
