Brumfondl: Hmmm, maybe try running Malwarebytes AntiMalware on one of the machines and see it anything comes up? I get the feeling there is something running on both machines that is causing your issue and I kind of doubt it is anything good.

Thanks. I've installed MBM on both. Currently into the Heuristics scan - 5 objects found on the 8.1 (Ask toolbar stuff in my wife's profile) and 2 on mine (similar malware from a subtitle downloader and a Youtube Video downloader.

I let MBM quarantine the 3 items it found on my Win 7 64 box, restarted and tried the MediaCreationx64.exe again - same result, silent failure. MBM still scanning the 8.1 laptop.

Thanks very much for your efforts to help. This problem has persisted on both machines after ruunning MBM and letting it clean the mal/adware it found. Where's majikthise, I wonder? laughing

Well done on getting where I got my name :)

The only other thing I can think of is the rather extreme measure of backing up your data on the Win7 box and doing a clean install of W7 sp1 on it and trying the tool on the machine with nothing oelse on it. But that is really extreme.

My guess is still that there is some piece of software common to both machines that is stopping the tool from working. and you just need to find out what it is.

Thanks again. I think I might just download it on a friend's laptop instead ☺

That's the right idea Stuart, the tool just creates the media, I found creating to a USB thumb drive nice and easy. Then you can update all your machines and your friends.

Yeah. It's just the annoyance of not being able to figure out WHY that bothers me. So many people here have been so helpful, and et the problem persists. The workaround is straightforward, but it doesn't scratch that curiosity itch. laughing

Yes, the "why" bugs me too.  The software tool that failed to update my Compute Stick and went into another universe is quite happy to download W10 onto a usb drive (doing that now -- wouldn't it be a pain if it downloads the 4 gig and THEN won't run the setup...with me getting close to my monthly limit with 2 weeks to go...)

One of reasons PC'S so versatile is that you can assemble them with a bunch of random components. This also their achilles heal so when a new OS arrives even with all the testing there will be weird happens like these, Apple have a distinct advantage in that they make the hardware so they should know all the variables when they release an OS it should just work.

I take my hat off to Microsoft even Linux, for supporting so much gear, that's why I not surprised by this happening. Once you have the install media you should be okay, the only thing I would suggest is run a tool like 'Gary Utilities' to run a health check prior to your upgrade.

Agree absolutely.

My news is that USB upgrade on my Compute Stick failed -- downloaded the creation tool onto a USB, put the media onto its D drive (64 GB SD card) and ran it.  All went well until it required a reboot without the media so I turned it off, extracted the SD card, and restarted (by pressing the button on the stick). On rebooting, it stuck in BIOS, so I had to attach a wired keyboard to tell it to boot normally.  Then I inserted the SD card, and it came up with some error (forgotten) and put me back, after a while, into 8.1.

Other related news -- I reported somewhere that my ASUS T100 said it could not be upgraded to 10 -- error, it is a ME400C.  That's bad, and won't reflect well on ASUS, MS, and Intel -- there will be thousands of 2-year old tablets out there that are stuck in 8.1.  However, I did find on the web someone saying "just go ahead and upgrade, it will work with the 8.1 drivers", so I might do that.  And likely brick it.

I'm thinking now of going the ISO way for both machines, via a powered CD/DVD reader, as this may be simpler than juggling USB drives and wired keyboards.  Any comments on that approach?  Might have to wait until my 80 GB allowance rolls over!

Indeed. I am not annoyed, or angry at MS, just intrgued by the problem and irritated by my inability to figure it out. The Win 7 64 Pro box had a thorough check done by Need-a-Nerd just 2 weeks ago when I took it in to get physically cleaned, and came back with admiring comments about how well puteverything was worknig.  The 8.1 laptop is a bog standard Acer, no mods, just as is from Harvey Norman a couple of years ago. It's also interesting that not only does the exe not work at all on either saystem (when the 32-bit one almost does), but that it's also the only exe that doesn't run.

I'm no master geek, but I'm not intimidated by computer problems, and I also know where to ask for further assistance. When problems defeat the Hive, that rankles, more than issue itself, which is trivial to work aronud in this instance.

Same with me with the USB - was going fine until the first restart, then went into an endless reboot loop, only getting as far as the Gigabyte mobo logo each time. Pulled out the USB, then got the Windows 10 BSOD saying there was an error with in the SAFE_OS phase during BOOT or something, and reverted back to 7.
Funny thing is - then a message appeared in the Windows 10 app, saying that there were working with their partners and I'll be notified when the update is ready. It gave me an option to upgrade anyway ("not recommended") or be notified when it was ready.
I don't know - I've been trying for 4 days using the MCT with absolutely no joy. So maybe I'll just reinstall my patience and wait for the notification.

please send me the contents of the "c:\windows\panther" folder for Setup Logs on your failed install

I can't see why Asus T100 would not work, it is a Clovertrail ATOM and I have a few other systems with that working.  They are all the same inside so I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Yes go ISO
