dnb4life: so let me get this straight. in order to download it directly from the windows download centre you have to use internet explorer 7 and have silverlight installed. lol i've used mozilla for years now. that's pretty useless of microsoft to make it silverlight users only.

From where did you get that that Vista SP1 requires you to have IE 7 and Silverlight??

And Vista SP1 is available via Windows Update and not Windows Download Center

i think you need to actually read through the thread first before making assumptions. i never said sp1 requires ie7 and silverlight i said the windows download centre does.

there is a link posted earlier to the download centre - which is where i went because i've already had sp1 for weeks now but i want to get a solid copy of sp1 to hold on to because i don't want to have to download it everytime i reinstall - which i do frequently.

you'll find (also clearly discussed in this thread already) that you can get it from both windows update and the download centre, however the windows update version is much smaller.

The Microsoft Download Center does sometimes ask whether you want to try the new Silverlight version of Download Center (Beta) and if you choose not to, it will take you to the same old Download Center website portal.

I read somewhere that SP1 is only available via Wndows Update to those whose computers have the "compatible" drivers for SP1.  Of course, we mentioned above, you can always download it manually.

Windows Updates not only allows you to download patches / updates, it also checks whether the downloads are compatible with the drivers already installed on your computer.

Apparently, "within a few weeks" is the timeframe for Microsoft to deliver the compatible drivers for those who need them through Windows Update.

With an AuthenTec Fingerprint Sensor on most HP Business Notebooks now, there's a lot of people waiting for driver updates. MS state "version 7.7.1.7 or earlier " of the driver is incompatible with SP1. 7.7.1.2 is the latest version MS/AuthenTec seem to have on tap.

I'm running 7.9.0.4 on my HP Pavilion, surely one could download this version and apply it to the Business line of notebooks?

Can you give me the model number (not the series) of your pavilion please? I'll check it out, cheers

Found a driver on the HP site that may work. Cheers

Further to my earlier posts, no SP1 for me via WU. On my travel/work laptop (HP Pavilion DV2753TX) I'm running version 7.9.0.4 of the AuthenTec fingerprint sensor which is fine, but despite updating my Conexant audio driver from one on WU (released this month) which appeared to upgrade the driver to 4.36, the actual chdart.sys file is still sitting at 4.31 which is still preventing WU from seeing SP1, as outlined in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=948343#method5

Maybe I'll just wait another month instead of downloading that behemoth.

I run two laptops, model numbers of 2753TX and 9612TX. Put these model numbers in via www.hp.co.nz and it will list the AuthenTec fingerprint sensor driver as 7.9.0.4. On the 2753TX you can even download the DigitalPersona software.

It has just appeared on my Windows Update this morning which makes me wonder if Microsoft have staggered the release to better manage the load on their download server.

Anyway, it's now installed and it appears to have fixed the problem that I was having with my MS bluetooth mouse freezing up so that continues to be trouble free then I'll be really happy.

Edit : After a couple more hours of use it seems that the bluetooth mouse problem is still persisting though I actually don't think it's as bad as it was.

Well, it's not showing for me in WU either.  I have an Creative Audigy 2 ZS soundcard whose drivers are on the list i.e. "Ctaud2k.sys - version 6.0.1.1242 or earlier".  Funny thing, I checked and found I was on 6.0.1.1241 so I downloaded the supposed latest driver from Creative, which turned out to be 6.0.1.1242.

Sod knows what I'm meant to do now.  Knowing how often Creative seem to release drivers, it looks like I won't be getting SP1 in a hurry.

I had to download off microsoft.com as my sigmatel driver was blacklisted (thanks to dell and/or microsoft).

Great result, really recommend it.

EDIT:
i have become undecided now, with regards to whether i like it. geekzone reply seems to not load properly leaving me with br br br type marks .. plus no noticeable improvement
