Try uninstalling ZoneAlarm and try again. i have helped someone with an issue that was caused by zonealarm still blocking even when it was 'disabled'

Do you think it might just block opensource FTP programs? It's weird other still work?

BTW I had done that recently - I have spent far too much time on this.

Have you tried to connect to another server via FTP using FileZilla?

e.g. ftp://releases.ubuntu.com

Why not to use build-in Windows 10 File Explorer FTP functionality? no need any 3-rd party software.

Hadn't thought of another site - so the program does work (confirmed on another site) - just something to do with reading my sites. Thank you so much for that. The built-in FTP is command-line isn't it? I explained I'm operating at reduced levels since a stroke so That I need something that won't frustrate me with spelling mistakes, etc.

No, its has File Explorer user interface. Open your File Explorer, on LH select "This PC", on top menu click "Computer" and "Add a network location" and then follow the instructions. When you finished, all your new locations will be under "This PC" > "Network locations" area.

Thanks - didn't work instantly but will try with a site withouit passwords toorrow and go from there (FTP used to be so simple). Now a more "fun" task - a client changing from Xero to a desktop system - my first ever (although another is moving from MYOB in the cloud but he's not using a Kiwi package - even more fun). Cloud systems are proving too expensive for some.

Seems it's too much trouble - even the Windows function works with open sites - but as soon as I try username and password it's just like the open source FTP programs. Yet the proprietary ones work. My wife has got the same results - always good to know since I do get things wrong at times. Anyway thanks for all the thoughts - the answer's there somewhere but the IT guy couldn't sort it - so I'll just accept it and move on.

I have no customers using FTP nowadays - it's insecure.

I think FTPS is generally discouraged these days, with SFTP being the recommended option (as it operates over the modern and secure OpenSSH protocol).
