I've used FTP for a long time. Not as much these days, so can suffice with what I have - but I finally had a third party look at it (he's got an IT business), and he didn't charge because he couldn't solve it either.

My FTP program of choice for many years is no longer available in it's free form. No worries - I prefer open source software anyway - fees tend to be more sensible. So I tried without success a couple of open source programs (the main one being Filezilla). The guy I called in had no joy either on my system or his. Yet the old program works - as does a simpler free version of a commercial product. So open source products no, commercial yes.

This makes no sense to this bear of little brain, so I wondered if anyone had any suggestions.

I find winscp does all I need file copy wise. Can't recall if it's done the thing where it makes invalid local filenames tjay are valid remotely or not but I haven't seen that in a long time anyway.

Deep within Windows 10 is the command line BSD version of ftp.

Open a command or Powershell window enter the ftp command and return to the future using mystical commands such as binary put or bye.

Sorry, I didn't quite catch the problem here - are you looking for FTP client suggestions?

Windows FTP is the good old command line program and still there. I used WS_FTP before when I had the need for a GUI-based FTP client.

PhilANZ: I've used FTP for a long time. ... So open source products no, commercial yes. ...

You don't mention if you host an FTP server or just use an FTP client. FileZilla can do both.

As to suggestions, open source is generally a labour of love, i.e. the developer works on it as & when he can because he wants to. Commercial software has an incentive to solve the problem, money. There are many things that can contribute to your problem. Maybe your OS vendor changed something under the hood & your FTP supplier is not aware of these changes. Maybe your open source product run on a freemium model, i.e. you have to pay for additional functionality. If your Win10 box has multiple NICs, maybe your freemium software only binds to the first NIC instead of all or you can't specify? Do you use a firewall or other security related product that inspects your network traffic? Are you behind a proxy?

I think you need to expand on the use, and the actual issue.

I use Filezilla almost every day (server and client) with Windows 10, no issues on a variety of different client networks.

Filezilla really is the de facto standard in this area.  What's the problem you're having with it?

WINSCP is the second I tried - "Transfer channel can't be opened. Reason: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond".

Command lines and the like are a distant memory - I used them under DOS and OS/2 - but had a stroke over a decade ago and since than have reduced to Windoze because even when someone (usually my wife) gets me going on something, unless I use it daily it's always a pain returning to it. Plus most clients use a Windows accounting system.

WS_FTP is indeed the commercial product product we've been using - but trying to install it on my wife's new Gigabyte was problematic. Could buy the commercial version - but I only use it 1-2 times a month - and she seldom uses it.

Filezilla is my first choice - confused me at first having server and client. We only need FTP client. I thought at forst it might be that our sites have moved to Google (our host left NZ for health reasons) but the fact that both commercial programs work "out of the box" has been really confusing. That's why I finally called in a local IT guy - but he had the same problems.

Status: Server does not support non-ASCII characters.
Status: Logged in
Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Command: PWD
Response: 257 "/" is the current directory
Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 Type set to I
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (104,197,84,209,230,172).
Command: MLSD
Error: The data connection could not be established: ETIMEDOUT - Connection attempt timed out
Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing

Those errors look like FTP server issues, ie. not your end.  I use WinSCP and FileZilla on a daily basis without issue.

My money is on them using legacy FTP (*shaking head*)  To prove my point try using "plain FTP" and report back

I have tried many settings - including that one - no joy.

We use FileZilla here at work for connecting to a remote image server (for uploading and downloading large image files).

I found that newer version of FileZilla did not work (Win by the way), using an older version (I think we found using 3.7.0.1 works, and 3.15 doesn't). Weird, and no reason for it, but using the older version fixed issues we were having like yours.

Tried the older version - no change. Was going to say I've already checked with firewall off and thought I'd give it one more go. No chage - BUT while I was there I checked the log - there were two blocks today - don't know if they're related since they're TCP rather than FTP - but I don't know much. Even if they were related, other attempts weren't thwarted by ZoneAlarm.

As I said I'd already disabled ZoneAlarm in my previous attempts - retried just to make sure without success. Neither Filezilla nor WINSCP work - but both WS-FTP and CoreFTP do. I can settle on CoreFTP to replace WS-FTP, but not being able to get the others working drove me to get a local guy in (via remote - and when that failed I thought I should just check here. Looks like I'll crawl back into my hole and live with CoreFTP.
