But I wouldn't leave the door unlocked on purpose.

MS know the door is open and aren't doing anything about shutting it, so of course people are going to enter it and help themselves. Especially since there's no clear warning to say "don't enter here without permission".

I can foresee down the road, MS shutting the door, deactivating a crap load of licenses, and having mass riots from users who thought they had activated legally, and MS spending god knows how many hours trying to sort through which were actually "legal" or not.

"you rolled out illegal upgrades to your customers." - but if they had legitimate Win 7 license, and 10 installed happily with no warning.......   whose to say it was illegal.

I just think MS need to make it clear on the situation for all.

Anyway, I've said my piece, I'm keeping outta this discussion any further.

Those in the industry should know that the 10 free upgrade is no longer legit . MS gave the date of the free install period, that was well known.
Everyone just looks for excuses & ways to make it seem legit .
Many average users wrongly assume its OK .
Its piracy when you install Win10 without a legitimate license .

I do think MS could do a lot more to stop this (if they wanted to) & do alot more to publicise that its no longer legit .
Just stop new Win10 activations using win7 keys .
MS used to often deactivate XP & office installs that used dodgy install keys . Are they going to start deactivating 7-10 upgrades ?

Jan2020
I'll bet a lot of Win7 PC's will be upgraded to 10 around that time. Its happening allready, its actually still really common to do this .
I have to ask, do MS even care ? It really seems not .

Its just the same as with Office installs some years back.
Did you get 1 ,3,5 separate PC Office installs : Joe public & Stores selling Office didnt know & usually got it wrong.
Rather than clarifying & putting that in bold print on the front of package , MS left it in a state of FUD and looked the other way .
Ive had many a heated arguement with customers re how many PC's Win(OEM) or Office could be installed on. Now I just give up & install it on whatever they ask.

MS , you made this hard for those who have to deal with it :-(

Jogre:

Office will stop activating, you get a max number of activation before it will stop working and you need to call support.

If MS allow multiple Office activation's (as they do) , on different PC's (as they do), then it could be argued that MS are in fact allowing it .

If I leave my house unlocked....
and watch as strangers walk in, wander around, and I do nothing just watch them , then Ive effectively allowed it & deemed it OK .
Its not really theft if I allow it .
:-)

I doubt they will hard deactivate Windows like they did at one stage in the XP days, more likely cram your Start Menu full with ads, nag you to buy a OneDrive/Office 365 subscription or maybe lock you into Windows 10 S mode.

I did the win 7 install from my own genuine registered disc, on my new clean unpartitioned  HHD, and then is was installed on a separate partition by Micro$oft,
I had nothing to do with that.
If they can see my product code in seconds I,m sure they would have checked this partition for my copy of win 7, Before they let me do the upgrade. to see if it was legit
And if they decided that I am outside the time limit ,they would have booted me. And even more so, seeing I downloaded my win 10 copy from them,direct..

I didnt go through the back door  I went to the front, and rang the bell and they said yes
