OK, I am old and it takes time for my brain to kick in. I finally had the bright idea to try printing in colour and that works fine. Apparently the cheap ink in the black tank is the problem. I just ran several deep cleans but no improvement. Am I correct in assuming that the large tank is the one used for black-only printing?

Time to wrap this up. I have found a workaround solution by slightly changing the font colour in Word. Printout still looks perfectly black but is now using ink from the other tank and the page is printing normally. Thank you everyone who has contributed to this thread. Problems like this that don't have immediately apparent causes tend to drive me nuts in my old age and I really appreciate the help.
