Does anyone here have knowledge of printers? I almost never print anything but today I needed to make a label. The computer I'm using is running Windows 7. The printer is a Canon Pixma ip4200. The last time I used it, a few months ago, it was fine. Nothing has changed with it since then.

This time I am getting big blank areas down the page. After spending most of a day running tests and trying different things, I printed out a solid wall of text as a test. It looks like this, except it continues down to the bottom of the page:

Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext   Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext   Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext walloftext Walloftext walloftext

On the printout, the top half of the first line is completely blank. The second line is normal. The third line is completely blank. The fourth line is cut off like the first one. This pattern repeats to the end of the page, 1 1/2 printed lines alternate with 1 1/2 blank ones all the way down.

I tried printing from different software (Word and Notepad). Identical results with blank areas in both cases. I tried an internal test print. It came out normal, no blank areas.

I have no idea what to try next. Does this sound familiar to anyone? I don't think it is a physical printing error since the internal test print is normal but it doesn't seem to be a software error either since Word and Notepad both do the same. I am stymied.

Thanks I've been through all that. Nothing seems to make a difference. I tried everything I can think of, including rebooting the computer and reinstalling (several times) the driver. The only thing left, which I'm going to do now, is install the printer on a completely different computer just to see if it makes a difference. Something has to be causing this.

Have you tried cleaning the printhead? Should be an option somewhere in the Canon software.

Okay I just installed the printer on a completely different computer (laptop) that no printer has previously been installed on and I'm getting exactly the same thing. It has to be something with the damned printer, even though it never gets used and even though internal test files print normally.

The internal test files print normally so I don't see how it could be the print head.

Maybe see if there is a factory printer reset.

It could be something to do with bidirectional printing. It could be ok left right then missing on the return pass. The test print may not test that.

Good thinking. I will try to look into that. Thanks for the tip.

I had a canon printer, different model, and it did something similar.  Like you it is a printer that isn't used much.  Happened a while after I had put in a couple of cheaper AFTERMARKET (non Canon) inks.

I had given up on it until one day a sale turned up where Canon ink was in special for a great price so I decided to take a punt and replaced the two aftermarket inks.  Works fine now.

Problem is that its an expensive punt to take.

It's definitely the print head that needs cleaning.

There must be a utility in the software to do it, usually in Win7 you can find it by right clicking the printer in Devices and Printers and choosing Printing Preferences. HP Printers are different in that they install other bloatware that includes the cleaning utilities.

Not sure if Canon print cartridges include a new 'head' or if (like Epson) they are just ink tanks. HP inks include the head (you can tell by looking at the bottom of the cartridge, if it's just a hole to pump the ink out, the head will be seperate.

Head/Nozzle cleans generally use a bit of ink, but most of the time they work fine.

Interesting points above. I tried the reset but that didn't so anything. But I did indeed buy cheap ink cartridges a long time ago and put them in the printer. They worked fine at the time and have been little used since, but if this can cause the kind of issue I am having it certainly makes sense. I will definitely clean the print heads, which I haven't tried yet.

Yup clean the print head and do it about 5-6 times.

Inkjet printers don't like to sit unused for any length of time as they do clog up like this.

So I deep cleaned the print head and it didn't make any difference. I sure am getting tired of wasting my paper on this stupid thing. I am not prepared to spend a ridiculous amount of money on official ink tanks and still end up with the same problem. I am annoyed and thoroughly fed up with Canon.
