manhinli: What is your HTPC made of?

Motherboard: abit IP35 Pro
Graphics: Leadtek Winfast PX8500 GT 256MB HDMI Silent
OS: Vista 32bit
RAM: 4GB generic (2GB at mo as other 2GB DOA)
Case: Silverstone LC16M
PSU: Corsair HX520W

manhinli: Graphics being not detected for Aero could be from poorer generic drivers - and I personally would have gotten new ones online.

I went into safe mode and used the system restore to remove the display drivers I installed, and that has got me back to square 1, so back into windows now, but the card is not showing up in the Vista rating tool...

I will come back to this, as this machine is not currently online.

manhinli: Sound - is it integrated? If it is, it's usually part of the chipset drivers and probably won't work until they're installed as each chipset interfaces differently.

I just installed the realtek HD sound drivers as supplied on the disks, but still no sound....will keep digging....I must be missing something

Hmmm......

The latest Leadtek Winfast video drivers do not seem to be helping....

It appears the drivers installed by default are the standard microsoft ones...
They work, but obviously give the Vista rating 1.

Installing the latest Leadtek Winfast video drivers from either the website or the disk I has, seems to causing the screen to go blank...
It appears as if the card is no longer sending a signal to the TV after doing the initial bootup, just before going into windows, the 'HDMI' message comes up on my TV in the top left corner, as it does when there is no longer a signal or its just been turned on...

So....i can go in safe mode with these drivers installed, but is there anything that needs to be changed in the settings for it to send a signal via the HDMI output?

Or is it something else....

Surley it shouldnt be this difficult?

No it shouldn't

I would suggest downloading drivers from Nvidia for the video card.http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winvista_x86_175.19_whql_uk.html

The sound card, well it should work and if it doesn't try some new drivershttp://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=24&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3

If you are still having issue random blue screens and the ram that is removed is still removed thenI would suggest another hardware issue maybe the motherboard.
Oh and don't worry about Vista's rating until you have installed all of the system drivers including the intel chipset drivers.
I am going to guess and say that your system should get a rating of 4.5 to 5. Based on the lowest score for 2d video speeds and maybe 3d video as well. cpu, ram, hard drive these days are all above 5 easy.
Also get Vista SP1 installed asap a lot of video fixes in there.
