I would consider anything that gives me the functionality I want, though 'browser-based' doesn't really light my fire. But I'm certainly willing to look at it. What I like about popmail is the one-click simplicity of it. Click and it downloads any new posts. Click and it sends my replies. I avoid webmail for a reason.

With Gmail via a browser there is no downloading - just click to read.  For sending emails you just compose then click to send.  No download or upload required.  Apologies if I am missing something here but I made the move from using a pop client to Gmail using a browser (Edge now) years ago and have never looked back.

Wouldn't I have to keep a tab open for that? I also have multiple accounts on different servers. How would that work? Whether I use popmail or not, I need something that works like popmail.

all those services use imap

Why not switch to that?

Would imap work for this? I don't know much about it but I think the security upgrade applies to any client software.

imap on gmx supports SSL/TLS on port 993 and STARTTLS on port 143

with imap there is no need to click to download your messages. If your mail client is open it will download messages as soon as they arrive.

I have a permanent Gmail tab - but you can simply bookmark gmail.com, open a tab and use the bookmark to get at your Gmail account.  When finished, leave the tab open if you wish or close it. Reading incoming mails, replying or sending a new email involve few clicks and no send/receive functions that pop clients require.

You can also access other (non-Gmail) accounts but from memory if you reply it will use your Gmail address as the reply-to.

You can use a browser interface for each email account - GMX advertise this and Orcon have a webmail server.

The functionality of the browser-based services is that the interface mains unchanged if you stay current with the browser of your choice.

Thanks for the info. Also to everyone else who has replied here. I am going to have to work my way through this. Google is already giving me a hard time with all its security crap which I didn't ask for and don't want. Mainly it seems to want to force me to stay signed on to it all the time just to be able to access email. That is the kind of thing I don't appreciate much. Never mind that it sends me a dozen screeching warnings every time I use a different device. Maybe this is what the rest of the world wants but it doesn't appeal much to me.

Edit to add: If Google is so damned security-conscious, why do all the phishing emails and hot girl wants friend scams come from fake Gmail addresses?

Just to put a punctuation mark on this, I have tentatively decided to go with Thunderbird. It is bloated but the endless configuration options give me the flexibility to create something that looks and feels a lot like what I am used to. Most of the options I just turn off.

I looked at some other things but none were satisfactory. In typical Windows fashion, the Win 10 Mail app just went around in circles so that was easy to decide. eM Client might be okay, but the free version only allows two accounts and I need more. Others I looked at were unsuitable for different reasons so I did not pursue them.

I need some time to get used to Thunderbird but it looks like it will probably be acceptable. Thanks again to everyone who made suggestions. They all helped to clarify my thinking.

Well, I just went down my first rabbit hole. It is utterly impossible to convert the Live Mail address book to anything other than a jumbled mess in Thunderbird. So far I can't find a way to do it. I guess this will be my new hobby.

Thanks, I worked it out. Created the separate vcf files then merged them from a Command prompt and imported into Thunderbird. I was put off by the very limited format options, just vcf and csv. Most clients can at least handle the major formats.
