SpartanVXL: Now MS might change this in the next major version release, but what happened before was that all people had to do was get the next versions iso and do the upgrade with bypass again.

That procedure is way beyond the average consumer. The bigger problem is the average consumer will not even realize updates have stopped. Will the companies selling this gear provide support for that process? Unlikely because that would be uneconomic and the warranty provided for secondhand machines is usually between 90 days and 12 months.

On the plus side for an affected unwarned consumer it is covered by CGA imo.

I like that all this perfectly good gear is being given a second life. It is not good that consumers are not warned about this significant limitation when buying affected machines.

I’ve found you don’t need any hacks to install Windows 11 off a usb stick on old hardware - maybe it’s due to the installer being a bit old?

I tried a stick imaged with 25H2 over the weekend on a pre-gen8 cpu but it wouldn’t even come up in boot devices. Curiously, I booted the laptop off the old stick which gave me the multiple UEFI options for booting including the stick, unplugged and swapped over to the 25H2 stick and selected the USB option, to which it then booted and installed from.

That sounds like a edge case. Coincidentally I have a machine on my desk installing this morning using a USB installer generated with the Media Creation Tool Friday. It detected the incompatible CPU and halted the install. It needed the documented BypassCPUCheck setting to complete the installation.

When recycling old machines from work I install W11 on them in this manner, just because. I’ve done plenty of them so far without being denied.
