Satch: Where's the freakin' family pack?????

Unfortunately there is no Windows 7 "Family Pack" available in New Zealand.

It is only available for a limited time in just a handful of countries, unfortunately not including New Zealand

Hi Nathan,

Your confirmation is both appreciated and disappointing.  I was fearing this was the case, but still held out hope anyway.

What is the reason behind Microsoft's decision not to release the Family Pack in NZ?

The three pack is a different concept to the Family pack and is therefore more expensive.  I might have to go for a Technet sub instead.  Now if I can find a good promotion code...

It is worthwhile to point out that TechNet subscriptions offer Microsoft software licensed for evaluation purposes.  There are no time limits or feature limits in the softwarea but they are for evaluation only

currently there is 25% off new TechNet subscriptions using the promotion code TNWIN7RTM

Using a TechNet subscription to license your Windows 7 machines at home I don't think they quite fits into the evaluation intent :)

Hi Nathan,

I knew that already, but thanks for the reminder. :)

Now why isn't the Family Pack coming to NZ? You never answered that one.

The Family Pack is available only in a handful of countries.  It is a special promotion and limited offer that is unavailable in most countries including NZ.  NZ shouldn't feel left out and most countries don't have the offer avaiilable either.  The Win7 Family Pack option is available only in the United States, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden

This doesn't really answer my question but I am grateful for the fact that you confirmed it wasn't coming this way.  Thanks.

I'm not sure how else I can answer it for you :)

Its a promotion an experiment if you will, and the promotion is just available in those countries that I mentioned, we'll gather feedback in those markets and then decide what happens from there

With our parallel importing laws, nothing stopping you from importing that pack from a country that does have it available

Ahh, now that answers it, thanks.

In terms of getting the Family Pack from overseas, I don't think many places will ship computer software internationally.  But I could be wrong.

I contacted Ascent today and asked if they were likely to be listing any "Upgrade" or "Academic / Student" editions of Windows 7.
The only thing they could tell me was they were expecting an "Upgrade" version of Windows 7 in early November, but said that it would most likely be "more or less" the same price as the current OEM's they have listed.
They also mentioned that as a rule OEM's are generally cheaper anyway, which is about right.

Has anyone had any success shipping from overseas with software, specifically Windows etc.....?
I have my doubts that it would even be worth it.... but I also could be wrong.

unlike hardware purchases, with software its a bit easier to obtain support worldwide... no need to ship back to supplier for warranty.

unfortunately by-product of parallel importing: microsoft NZ will miss out on the revenue & license/seat count and nathan will get his salary docked!

I am surprised that initiatives offered in the US and other countries are not brought over here though... it can't help the brand when this sort of thing happens and it always feels like we get ripped off when we have to pay more than the americans when our spending power is lower :/

Correction.  They are happy to ship anything other than Windows 7 to NZ...

Exploring other options now.

Definately keep us updated on your findings. I am keen to get a copy of the family pack also.

Does anyone know the details of the "Anytime upgrade" feature of Windows. Will it be available in NZ?
What would it cost?
EDIT: I have only just looked again on Ascent and they have the "Anytime Upgrades" listed. Pretty expensive though considering the difference in price between the actual versions.
