Yep Wreck90 that pretty well sums up my thoughts!
Luckily my daughter lives in Nth Carolina and just happens to be coming home to NZ in a coupla weeks. Guess what - she's bringing a brand new copy of Win7 Home Premium Family Pack for her dear ole Dad. That's three licences for US$149.95 or NZ$200.00. Less than $70 a licence.

Yeah, M$ has failed with the release of W7. Saw people in the shop looking at it, the price really hit them hard.

M$ needs to get their act together.

Family Pack is a marketing experiment imo, it's only available in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden.

You could buy it from an online store in one of those countries and get it sent here if you felt like it.

I'll be heading back to slow old Vista when my beta expires unless the pricing radically alters. I'm downloading Ubuntu for experimenting with as I type this.

The current prices, coupled with the most awful invention ever (the ribbon in Office 2007+) are forcing me away from Microsoft products...

wreck90: New Zealand are one of the poorer countries in the OECD.

So, why must we pay the highest prices in the world for windows 7?

Because, microsoft NZ are a bunch of greedy pigs at the trough.

You might say, but, they have lower economies of scale.

This might apply to hardware goods, but certainly not to software.

Why does it not apply to software, but does to hardware?  Because it actually is the case - Microsoft NZ has lower economies of scale.  They can't import the sort of quantities that Microsoft Australia can.  This is the same reasoning they used as to why 500 Teched NZ attendees could buy an HP Mininote for $600 while all Teched Australia attendees got the same HP Mininote free with their ticket.  I imagine that you could place the blame squarely with Microsoft Corporation in Redmond.  Especially if they fix their prices for regional offices like Apple does (with a 2:1 against the USD exchange rate).

Also Tech.Ed Australia was more expensive. It helped offset the costs of those HP Mini...

XP is soo old, many things just do not work. Those that work are just slow, over time the OS becomes slow in all areas. 32-bit, 64 is not worth touching. No DX11, wordpad is useless in XP, 7 is abit like word. It had massive amount of cool features XP just does not have.

No one is forcing you to buy Windows 7, feel free to consider staying with XP, Vista or going to Mac OSX or some flavour of Linux.

Microsoft are a business not a charity and they can set the price at whatever they feel like.

There, someone said it...

There are free, open source alternatives, you know? But if you must use Windows (because of a specific business app or because you are a keen gamer) then that's the price.
