stagnant16: Try Delete Doctor - Has worked for me many a time.

Not for me :( I open the file in Delete Doctor and it says 'videoplayback.mp4. File Not Found, check the file name and try again'.

I cant even 'hide' the file either :(

Have had success with the following.

The other way is start - run - cmd
And find your way to the directory the file is in. ctrl-alt-del and kill explorer.exe to ensure its not a file lock state.

Then try the attrib and delete commands. Could be wrong HOWEVER, file not found tends to indicate a MFT entry error more than anything.

Have you tried deleting the directory it is in?

Don't think he can - the errant file is on his desktop. So deleting the directory would delete his desktop.

I tired unlocker and it didnt work.

Just did the cnt+alt+del then shut down explorer then tried to delete the file in command, still says 'file not found'

its baffling isn't it?

Hmmm,

Can you try the following:

Right click on desktop, new text file and call it:
videoplayback.mp4

or videoplayback

then rename it to videoplayback.mp4 in the cmd prompt

See if it asks you to overwrite the existing file, if not, then try deleting it afterwards
If it does, say Yes to overwrite.

If not, second option:
Right click the file, click CUT

Then refresh the desktop and hopefully it might disappear

Failing that, hmmm have you got any other accounts on the PC? Maybe an Admin one?
rebuild the local desktop from a different account maybe

Baffling it is !!!

From a DOS prompt, have you tried a chkdsk x: /f ? You may get a message that the scan will only run on next reboot.

x = is your disk letter - probably c

Then try deleting once chkdsk has run it's course ...

alternatively, try copying another file with the same name over the top of it.

What are the properties of the file ( right click - properties ).. Should be a few tabs visible. It's not a misnamed shortcut, or something silly ...

Might need to change the security settings of the file - if possible ... to allow Everyone full access.

yeah chkdsk would be a good bet

Also maybe the registry has a file in it:
Start, Run, regedit, CTRL+F, then search for that file and remove any entries relating to it
Sounds like it could be a corrupt entry

I tried both the Cut and Rename/Replace idea when it first appeared, but didn't work. Only one account, mine which is the Administrator.

Would it have something to do with the fact the extention is .mp4. ?

Damn, that sucks, can you try creating a secondary account with admin rights? just to see if you can remove the file that way?

Yeah, have you searched the registry for an entry with the same name?

See if you can find one and kill it

Hi, Yeah i searched the registry, and got no results, and also used CCleaner just in case, which also didn't do anything.

I did try and do chkdisk C:\ F and the command said something like 'do on restart Y/N' I hit yes, then restarted but nothing came up saying it was scanning or checking though.
