a few things

1) what is your system specs

2) is your CPU running the high the whole time? (see task manager to find culprit)

3) it might be extremely difficult to resolve this without a clean reinstall - may be bordering on impossible if there are deeply rooted malware ...

mmmm that is not good news, altho my partner who is using it (i am on laptop) says it is performing much faster since I took off Spybot and put on Spyblaster

Specs:
Compaq pressario
Intel Celeron CPU 1400 dual core @ 2.00ghz
2gb DDR2 Ram
160gb HDD
Vista home basic sp2

CPU: runs asbout 30% most of the time, it is quite heavy

Reinstall: How do I do that?? and will I loose all my data???

It would appear that ssbkgdupdate.exe is the updater for the Scansoft paper port. If you want this program kept (and one would assume you use it) there would be no reason I can think of to keep it blocked. I would assume it has either been blocked by Windows Defender in the past, or manually added to the blocked list, if that's possible. (I don't know; I don't use WD.)

If you don't want it running all the time, though, disable it through its own program settings not to start with Windows, nor to update automatically, and do this manually whenever you want.

If you were to format and reinstall, yes, you'd lose all your data. It would be like it was brand new.

@joker97: are you seeing something here that is pointing to "deeply rooted malware"? Because, although not expert bu any stretch at all, I'm not. So if so, what is it, please, that is causing you to suggest a reinstall of Windows?

THV (hope you don't mind me using a TLA for your username), open task manager by pressing ctrl-alt-del together. Select the processes tab. Tick to "show processes from all users" in the appropriate box. Click the "cpu" tab, then again, to bring the highest CPU number to the top. (This is usually "system idle process, and typically runs in the high nineties, lowering when another program is using CPU under high demand.)

What is consistently using 30% (or thereabouts) of the CPU?

yes i am. the symptom of slowness and consistent CPU load. go to task manager, click on processes, click sort by CPU load, and see what is using your CPU.

if there is one cunning malware, chances are there are another twenty. cunning malware are very difficult to rid of, although possible. you can uninstall but due to hidden self executing files they may return.

now it is possible there isnt any deeply rooted malware, and i may be wrong. so just get rid of all the processes you dont need. do you know which ones you dont need and which ones you do? first of all get rid of all "toolbar"s. if any.

if yes try revo uninstall pro trial version - full functionality for 30 days.

The chances of HjT missing something these days are good, unfortunately, I don't think TM have kept its development up as much as the application deserves.

The chances of MBAM and Avast missing the same things, however, is low.
I'm inclined to think, as you, that this is a combination of possible software conflictions, and definitely too much loading at startup.

72 process seems way high, to me. I'm not a native Vista speaker, but on XP I have 32, and the max I've seen is 37.

I agree with joker97, in that you must not end processes in taskmanager without knowing what they are. And yes, they will (should) be recreated on reboot, which is why we're looking at configuring the programs that use them to NOT start with Windows.

Must hibernate, now. My power is all gone.

ok you know what it is all too complicated for me especially at this hour of the night.
I have disabled the sidebar on vista as it was stupid and i did not need it.
I will not disable anything in task manger without knowing exactly what it is. But I think joker97 is right GZ posts will not help might need to call a computer man up. I will get rid of windows defender though.

not all computer people are obsessive in getting rid of junk - make sure you tell them remove all unnecessary services and programs while watching them - basically get him to pull out the control panel uninstall programs menu and question him on every program and ask him why he shouldnt uninstall it. try doing on geekzone first i guess - post a big picture of the add remove programs screen under control panel and try us - but dont blame us if "the button on my laptop that used to make sound louder now doesnt work" or "my wireless is not working now" etc ...
