I'm fairly sure that if you keep that long number for next time, it will work again, but I can't confirm this.

No, it changes each time the PC is built.

I hope they have not changed their call center setup. Whenever I have had to talk to a human they have always been very clear English speakers whom it is obviously their first language.
I wonder if the time of day makes a difference. I have only ever had to call MS for activation when I am at work. I wonder if it is follow the sun?

In fairness, it was only one of them I had some difficulty with.   I don't think the line quality helped either.

I have called for activation assistance 4 or 5 times. Only once did I speak to somebody - in Australia I think. As I mentioned earlier, I then got bounced to the Phillipines and a final callback from China. The other times I just their voice activation system.
